DC
The direct current is produced by batteries, batteries and dynamos. Between the ends
of any of these generators a constant voltage is generated that does not change with
time. For example, if the battery is 12 volts, all receivers that connect to the battery will
always be at 12 volts (unless the battery is worn and has less voltage). If you are not
clear about the magnitudes of voltage and current, and what is the electrical current,
we recommend that you first see the links at the bottom.
Besides being all the receivers to the voltage of the battery, when connecting the
receiver (a lamp for example) the current that circulates through the circuit is always
constant (same number of electrons), and does not vary of direction of circulation,
always going in the same direction. That's why the + and the negative pole are always
the same.
If we had to represent the electrical signals of the Tension and the Intensity in direct
current in a graph they would be of the following form:
CORRIENTE ALTERNA
ALTERNATING CURRENT
This type of current is produced by the alternators and is the one generated in the
power plants. The current that we use in the plugs or sockets of the houses is of this
type. This type of current is the most common because it is the easiest to generate and
transport.
The alternator rotates its turns (rotor) 50 times every second generating a wave of
sinusoidal or sinusoidal voltage and current. This speed of rotation is said to have a
frequency of 50Hz (turns per second). In America it is 60Hz.
To know how the alternating current (and the wave) generates its values and an
alternator visits: Electric Generators.
Let's see how the graph of the voltage in alternating current is.
This wave is known as alternating sine wave and is the most common because it is what
we have in our homes. The intensity wave would be similarly but with the values of the
intensity logically, instead of those of the voltage.
As the voltage constantly varies, a reference voltage called Effective Value is taken. This
value is the value that should have in direct current to produce the same effect on an
AC receiver. That is to say if we connect an electric radiator to 220V in direct current
(always constant), it would give the same heat that if we connect it to an alternating
current with maximum voltage of 325V (variable voltage), in this case we would say
that the voltage in AC has a voltage of 220V, although it is not really a fixed value but
variable.
