Service Magazine SEPD1468, 20 July 2012, "Alternative Fuel System Prime Procedure for 3054C, C4.4
(Mech), and C3.3 Machine Engines with a Delphi Fuel Injection Pump Installed". Disregard this article. See
the replacement article that follows.

There have been a number of isolated instances of issues with the fuel injection pump on 3054C, C4.4
(Mech), and C3.3 engines. These issues with the fuel injection pump cause the engine to run rough, suffer
from low power, issues with starting the engine, and excessive smoke.

If air enters the fuel system, the air must be purged from the fuel system before the engine can be started. Air
can enter the fuel system when the following events occur:

The fuel tank is empty or the fuel tank has been partially drained.

The low-pressure fuel lines are disconnected.

A leak exists in the low-pressure fuel system.

The fuel filter is replaced.

A new injection pump is installed.

NOTICE

Ensure that the correct fuel priming procedure is carried out. Failure
to carry out the correct procedure may result in damage to the fuel
injection pump and other fuel system components.

To purge air from the fuel system, there is a new alternative fuel priming procedure. The following procedure
should be carried out before the engine is started.

1. Turn the keyswitch to the RUN position. Leave the keyswitch in the RUN position for 3 minutes.

Note: On certain applications, the keyswitch must be turned briefly to the START position before

returning to the RUN position.

NOTICE

Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow
the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine
again.

2. Crank the engine with the throttle lever in the CLOSED position until the engine starts.

Note: If necessary, loosen the union nuts on the fuel injection lines at the connection with the fuel
injector until fuel is evident. Stop cranking the engine. Tighten the union nuts to a torque of 30 N·m (22
lb ft).

3. Once the engine has started, operate the engine at low idle for 1 minute.

4. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position to stop the engine. Wait for 30 seconds.

5. Start the engine. The fuel system will now be primed and ready for operation.

This priming procedure is an alternative procedure to the existing procedure documented in the latest release
of the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Use the most suitable priming procedure for the application to
purge air from the fuel system.
