I will Survive: Study Tactics of HUMSS students in understanding Statistics and Probability

I .Introduction

Nowadays, there are many students that are struggling in their studies. Especially in

major subjects like Mathematics. One of the units in Mathematics is Statistics and Probability.

And most of the time, when the students heard this subject, they usually tremble. This is the kind

of attitude that we used to experience in this subject. Some student thinks that Statistics and

Probability is very difficult to understand the topic. Not all the students are advanced and

intelligent when it comes to math. But some student has their own learning tactics to excel in

Statistics and Probability subject. That is why the researcher comes up to this topic.

Statistics and probability are sections of Mathematics that deals with data collection

and analysis. Probability is the study of chance and is a very fundamental subject that we apply

in everyday living, while statistics is more concerned with how we handle data using different

analysis techniques and collection methods. These two subjects always go hand in hand and thus

you can't study one without studying the other. Probability and Statistics or also called Statistics

and Probability are two related but separate academic disciplines. Statistical analysis often uses

probability distributions and the two topics are often studied together. However, probability

theory contains much that is mostly of mathematical interest and not directly relevant to

statistics. Moreover, many topics in statistics are independent of probability theory.

Probability is the Mathematical Language of Randomness which enables you to reason

about or make predictive statements about outcomes of physical systems or processes that have

randomness or uncertainly.
Statistics works the other way it describes and summarizes characteristics of observed

outcomes, or data, extracts patter from it and makes statements about under laying mechanisms

or intrinsic structures of the physical system or process.

Hopefully, the discussion above has helped you to understand a little better

what the terms measurement and statistics mean. However, you may still be wondering "Why do

I need to learn statistics?" or "What future benefit can I get from a statistics class?" Well, since

you asked - there are some reasons to study statistics. The first reason is to be able to effectively

conduct research. Without the use of statistics it would be very difficult to make decisions based

on the data collected from a research project. For example, in the study cited in Chapter One, is

the difference in recorded absenteeism between psychiatric and obstetrics nurses large enough to

conclude that there is meaningful difference in absenteeism between the two units? There are

two possibilities: The first possibility is that the difference between the two groups is a result of

chance factors. In reality, the two jobs have approximately the same amount of absenteeism. The

second possibility is that there is a real difference between the two units with the psychiatric unit

being more nurses missing work. Without statistics we have no way of making an educated

decision between the two possibilities. Statistics, however, provides us with a tool to make an

educated decision. We will be able to decide which of the two possibilities is more likely to be

true.

We will base this decision on our knowledge of probability and inferential

statistics. The reasons to study statistics are to be able to effectively conduct research, to be able

to read and evaluate journal articles, to further develop critical thinking and analytic skills, to act

a an informed consumer, and to know when you need to hire outside statistical help. Before
looking at research related to learning statistics, it is important to think about how students learn

in general .Learning in a course is more complex than merely remembering what students have

read or been told, and many of us have found that students do not necessarily learn by having us

explain to them how to solve a problem.

The Purpose of this study is to find out and discover what is the different tactics

of the students in solving and how they can easily understand the Statistics and Probability.

Researchers want to know what strategies or tactics that may respondents use if it is their own

tactics or different from others. The researchers believed that for each students they have

different and unique tactics to understand or acknowledge the Statistics and Probability even the

students are good or not good in this subject. It is important for us to let know their opinion in

this research because the researchers will be able to give our own judgment about their answers

and especially the researchers will also use this in understanding Statistics and Probability.

Chance, B .Ben-ZviD .Garfield, J.Medina,E.states that Technology has been and will continue to

be a major factor in improving student learning of Statistics. Not only their own tactics will help

to all of the students to understand Statistics and Probability but also the technology will help

for all the students to simply understand the topic in Statistics and Probability because most

commonly these past few days in technology it gives easiest way how the students will

understand the Statistics and Probability.

As researcher we conduct this study to simply understand the Statistics and

Probability and how the other students overcome the topics about this subject. The researchers

conduct the study because the main goal of the researchers is to know what is the different tactics

in understanding Statistics and Probability from different students and the researcher also wants
to spread this tactics in different students to help them and motivate them that even the Statistics

and Probability is one of the subject that is really hard to understand, it is very useful and worth

to understand. The importance of this study is to better know how deep their knowledge in

understanding Statistics and Probability. As the researchers, we all know that in Statistics and

Probability has many terms that we need to encounter but the significance of this study is all of

us will be able to understand the terms and we will apply this in real life situation in collecting

data. It is really hard to understand but Statistics and Probability is very useful especially for all

students because for every situation there is Statistics and Probability. It is always there in our

life. The researchers come up this research with statement of the problem. What are the coping

scheme of HUMSS students in understanding Statistics and Probability and How do the students

react on the challenges they encounter? Also what is their midterm grade in statistics and

probability.

II .Methodology

In conducting the research is choosing the right topic which is the main idea

that the researchers need to focus on, give time and to know what the sense of that research. In

this research, the first thing that the researchers decided to do is to understand the topic and to

identify the reason why the researchers will conduct the study because understanding the topic is

one of the best strategy to conduct a good research and to make it better. Researchers chose case

study method in research which is all about Study Tactics of HUMSS Student in Understanding

Statistics and Probability, because the researchers know that this is the best way to simply

understand their opinion. The researchers would like to feel and know what the respondents’

different strategy to understand Statistics and Probability. Knowing the respondents’ opinions

will give the researchers the right to give speculations about their opinions. The Researchers will

use a Purposive sampling to be the one who will judge the tactics will be used, Researchers

needs five (5) respondents from HUMSS students about this research.

The Researcher provides questions for the respondents. Those question

really helps us a researcher to understand statistics and probability. We limit our respondents

into five for us to identify if they are using their own tactics or the same with the others. The

respondents came from 2 regular sections and 3 special sections which may help us if there is an

advantage on it. The interview will be conducting for 2 days. Grade 11 Humss students is our

respondents.
