OVERVIEW
The ADC® WorldDSL™ EMS-830T (Figure 1) is an exchange office management shelf (EMS) that fits into a
600 mm or 19-inch rack. The EMS-830T accommodates up to 16 WorldDSL line-termination unit (LTU) or
universal termination unit (UTU) High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) E1 cards with a 75Ω unbalanced
input. You can also install one WorldDSL EMS-830T exchange office management unit.

COMPATIBILITY
The EMS-830T is compatible with the WorldDSL products listed in Table 2.
INSTALLATION
Before you install the EMS-830T, inspect the shipping carton for the components listed below. Notify the carrier
immediately if damages are found. Your shipment should consist of:
• One EMS-830T shelf
• One Installation Kit (part number 130-1049-01A)
• This document
To ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, carefully observe the following safety rules:
To ensure that your equipment does not become damaged, carefully observe the following cautions:
If a problem has been isolated to this unit, do not attempt to repair it. The unit's components
are not user serviceable and, therefore, must not be replaced. Please return the unit to ADC
for repairs.
MOUNTING
Before you can use an EMS-830T shelf, you should mount it into a 19-inch or 600 mm rack. The EMS-830T shelf
ships with the mounting brackets in place for mounting in a 19-inch rack. If you need to mount the EMS-830T in
a 600 mm rack, you must remove the mounting brackets and reverse their position on the EMS-830T chassis. The
screws required to mount the EMS-830T on a rack are contained in the Installation Kit included in the shipping
carton.
HDSL PAIRS
Connect the HDSL pairs to the EMS-830T shelf through the two 50-pin Telco connectors (HDSL 1-8, HDSL
9-16) connectors. See Figure 2 on page 2 for the location of the HDSL connectors. Refer to Table 3 on page 5 and
Table 4 on page 6 for the HDSL Telco connector pinouts.
Before disconnecting any cables that are attached to the HDSL connectors, be sure to
completely loosen the screws that secure the cable.
G.703 CONNECTORS
Connect the G.703 signal to the 75Ω In and Out BNC connectors for each populated slot.
Before disconnecting any cables that are attached to the HDSL connectors, be sure to
completely loosen the screws that secure the cable.
Make sure you set the jumper on the LTU or UTU to the 75Ω position before you install it. For
more information, see the documentation that came with the LTU or UTU.
See Figure 2 on page 2 for the location of the G.703 connectors. Table 5 below lists the 75Ω output connector
pinouts. Table 6 lists the 75Ω input connector pinouts.

PRIMARY POWER
Connect DC power to the shelf through the five-position -48V DC power-terminal strip:
1 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screw beneath the -48V connector labeled "A" (see Figure 3
below). Refer to Table 9 for the Power-terminal strip pinouts.
2 Insert the -48 Vdc cable from your primary -48 Vdc power supply, then tighten the screw you loosened in
step 1.
3 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screw beneath the RTN connector labeled "A."
4 Insert the RTN cable from your primary -48 Vdc power supply, then tighten the screw you loosened in step 3.
5 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screw beneath the Frame Ground.
6 Connect your isolated earth ground cable, then tighten the screw you loosened in step 5.
W0207-A
BACKUP POWER
Connect backup DC power to the shelf through the five-position Power-terminal strip:
1 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screw beneath the -48V connector labeled "B” (Figure 3 on
page 10).
2 Insert the -48 Vdc cable from your primary -48 Vdc power supply, then tighten the screw you loosened in
step 1.
3 Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the screw beneath the RTN connector labeled "B."
4 Insert the RTN cable from your backup -48 Vdc power supply, then tighten the screw you loosened in step 3.

3 Tighten the two captive retaining screws on the front of the LTU or UTU HDSL card.
EMU cards are installed in the same manner as an LTU or UTU HDSL card. However, an
EMU card must be installed into the right most slot of the shelf (see Figure 1 on page 1).
Refer to the appropriate technical practice for each installed LTU or UTU for information on how each line
unit should perform at power up.
