Research of San Francisco

◦ San Francisco holds a secure place in the United States’ romantic dream of itself—a cool, elegant, handsome,
worldly seaport whose steep streets offer breathtaking views of one of the world’s greatest bays. According
to the dream, San Franciscans are sophisticates whose lives hold full measures of such civilized pleasures as
music, art, and good food. Their children are to be pitied, for, as the wife of publishing magnate Nelson
Doubleday once said, “They will probably grow up thinking all cities are so wonderful.” To San Franciscans
their city is a magical place, almost an island, saved by its location and history from the sprawl and monotony
that afflicts so much of urban California. (San Francisco Culture)
◦ San Francisco, CA has a population of 864,816people with a median age of 38.3 and a median household
income of $92,094. Between 2014 and 2015 the population of San Francisco, CA grew from 852,469 to
864,816, a 1.45% increase and its median household income grew from $85,070 to $92,094, a 8.26% increase.
The population of San Francisco, CA is 40.8%White, 34.5% Asian, and 15.3% Hispanic. 43.9% of the people
in San Francisco, CA speak a non-English language, and 86.9% are U.S. citizens. (San Francisco, CA.)
◦ The San Francisco climate is a Mediterranean-type climate with consistent, moderate temperatures. The year
is divided into distinct dry and wet seasons, with most precipitation occurring between November and
March. A distinguishing climate feature is the fog that rolls in from the Pacific Ocean. San Francisco gets 24
inches of rain per year. On average, there are 259 sunny days per year in San Francisco. The July high is
around 69 degrees. The January low is 45. There is sunshine during two-thirds of the possible daylight hours.
The most characteristic feature of the weather, however, is the summer fog, which lies low over the city until
midday. This fog is a phenomenon of temperature contrasts, created when warm, moist ocean air meets cold
water welling up from the ocean bottom along the coast. (San Francisco Encyclopedia/San Francisco,
California Climate).
Transitional Housing Researching
◦ Transitional housing and building shelters for the homeless is one of my true desires as I move forward with my interior design career.
So, I am truly excited about this assignment. Before this class I was apart of a competition called “Ms. Veteran America” that raised
money for homeless female veterans. I came in 4th place and raised $9,000 for homeless female veterans to have a safe and suitable
housing. For my talent within this competition I built a model transition home and designed the interior as well. I wasn’t in this
competition to get glory or to honestly win. I wanted to help homeless female veterans. I grew up poor and recently my very own sister
was pregnant and homeless. I wanted to help fix this horrible epidemic so that’s why one of my main focuses once I complete my
degree is to help design safe and suitable homes for homeless women and their children.

◦ In Virginia there are a lot of transition homes and non-profit organizations. The main organizations that I got in contact with were:
Oxford House, Barrett Haven and Final Salute. The main consensus of the transition homes was preventing women and children from
becoming homeless. Jasism Boothe from “Final Salute” and Blair from “Barrett Haven” were very helpful when I called and asked
questions about their missions and how they are helping the prevention of homelessness. Each organization has several transition
homes, and each have a different method when it comes to their homes. Final Salutes mission is, “The mission of Final Salute Inc. is to
provide homeless women Veterans with safe and suitable housing.” They have a home in Alexandria that can hold five Families and Karen transition home in Alexandria, Virginia
their focus is transiting female veterans and their children into their own home once they have fully established themselves to well
suited to do so. They offer counseling, financial classes and help them find a job while they are inn the transition home. They have a
two-story home with a common kitchen area and living room space. They don’t want the home to feel like a half-way home. They
want it to feel like home. Most of these women have been in combat and lived in tents, on a ship and cots as military service members.
Making them feel like they are at home is the environment that they want to create so it helps them improve the way they think of life
every day in a different light.

◦ The Barrett Haven organization is not veteran focused, it is for single mothers and pregnant mothers that are homeless or on the brink
of homelessness. Their mission is “Our mission is helping single and single pregnant women in crisis become confident, independent
and self-sufficient.We provide comprehensive supportive services, transitional housing and the necessary skills to prevent and break
the cycle of homelessness.” They offer so many great milestones to help women in the Norfolk, Va area to get back on their feet. Some
items that they offer are: Employment counseling, food preparation, literacy skills to help gain their G.E.D. In the end these two
organizations are doing their utmost best to get women who have been through emotional/physical abuse, depression, drugs or
alcohol abuse and much more back on their feet’s. The Barrett home is like the Final Salute home. They remodeled an older home and
turned it into a functional home for numerous amounts of small families for mothers and their children. “Barrett provides dormitory
style, furnished bedrooms and a common living area and kitchen for a maximum of ten women at a time”. These common areas are
spaces are perfect to gather and have the families relate to each other and get to their end goal as a team. Both non-profits are doing
wonderful things for mothers and their children. What a great way to help our fellow sisters in need.

Concept Statement
◦ The design for the Women’s transition home in San Francisco will embrace and accentuate the essential
mission of a new beginning for mothers and their children. In San Francisco the sun sets along the shoreline
and beautifully into ones home. There will be oriel, stain glass and shingle-style gable inset bay windows to
view the San Francisco bay and let in the beautiful sun that sets the day to rest. The interior will be an
simplistic and functional to accommodate the families to sustain a non-clutter, non stress environment . A
balance of greys, blues and greens will provide a confident, hearty and stable flow in the home to provide a
stimulus of optimism throughout the common areas of the home. The
◦ use of parallel lines of the wainscoting and coffering along the walls and ceilings will gracefully overlook
and balance the dining room, kitchen and living room creating a grand and open atmosphere to make you
feel right at home. The harmonious combinations of reds, pinks and light browns within details of the
wallpaper and detailed elements through the rooms in the home will create the perfect nurturing
environment that encompasses the families in the home. The final touches of Queen Anne crown and
baseboard molding with modern touch of oriental rugs throughout the home adds a class, vibrancy and
soothing appeal.

Palette Inspiration #1:

The 1860’s inspired dress encompasses royal colors of blue, restful light
shades of grey and hints of joyful reds. These colors help create a serene
and unified environment that can be used within a living room, den,
common area or bedroom. Light oak and white crown molding trim
throughout would compliment with this palette greatly. Filtering hues of
off whites, light greys and light reds will help create a tranquil
atmosphere rewarding home to come home to.

Palette Inspiration #2:
The 1860’s umbrella that would have been used during the Queen
Anne Era presents a sense of shelter, elegance and protection.
Incorporating the various browns and grey elements as they are in the
palette would be a perfect match in a study, common area or bedroom.
White wainscoting within these rooms would create a very classy
touch to this color palette. The color scheme creates the care and
shelter much needed in a transition home to help encompass the
feeling of a “Home” that once never had. Bringing in lighter tones of
grey would be a perfect combination for this particular palette.

1860’s Umbrella (Queen Anne Revival Era)

Palette Inspiration #3:
The Anton Raphael Meng painting displays a variety of colors that
were used during the Queen Anne Era. There is a mix of dominate
and welcoming hues of red, brown, pink and blue. With such dark
colors, a softer approach to the hues would create a more welcoming
bedroom, bathroom or dinning areas. White coffered ceilings would
help balance out the dark tones to produce a graceful appeal. To
create a harmonious vibrancy in a transition home, combining whites
and pastels to this palette would be key. Any of the colors in this
palette could be used in various rooms throughout the transition
home.

Material Maintenance
Care and Maintenance for floor Medallion:
Humidity and Winter season warning: Please keep the humidity level in the house within acceptable
range of 40 to 60%. Dry in-house air is typical for a cold season. This is the primary cause for wood
warping, gaps and cracking in the inlays and is not covered by warranty. Use either HVAC build-in or
portable humidifier to maintain the environment. Inlay are more sensitive to the moisture fluctuations
than regular plank hardwood floors due to the combination of different wood species with different
hygroscopic properties. Simple electronic Hygrometer can be purchased from Amazon for approximately
$10-$20 to monitor the environment.

Care and Maintenance for parquet flooring:

General Cleaning Tips
Your natural hardwood floor requires some basic care and with the right knowledge and products,
you’ll be able to maintain your investment for long lasting durability and beauty. Keep these tips in
mind when cleansing your floors.

• Clean all spills immediately and protect your wood floor from excessive water exposure.
• Sweep or vacuum your wooden floors regularly. Before vacuuming, inspect your vacuum’s
wheels for abrasives that could scratch or damage your floor.
• Never use wax or oil based cleaners or any other general household cleanser on your wood
floor. Products containing citrus, tung oil, ammonia, vinegar or silicon can be especially
damaging.
• Avoid pouring cleaner or other liquids directly onto your flooring.
• Never use steam cleaners or steam mops. Water and steam can dull your floor’s finish and
potentially damage the wood.
• When using a mop, be sure that no excess water is left behind.

Advice for Long Lasting Protection

When regularly cleaned, hardwood floors can stay beautiful throughout the years. To protect your
flooring further, follow these suggestions from the expert craftsmen at Oshkosh Designs:

• Moisture levels need to be controlled, keep the relative humidity in your home between 30-
40%.
• Maintain an interior temperature between 60-80 ˚F (15.5-26.6 ˚C) throughout the year.
• While natural changes in color are to be expected as hardwood ages, you should protect your
floors from direct sunlight.
• Protect the high traffic areas of your floor with rugs or mat, but take care not to purchase jute
rugs or mats with rubber backs, as those materials can damage your wooden floors.
• Keep your pet’s nails trimmed and maintain a shoe-free home to prevent scratches to the
hardwood.
• Candle wax or chewing gum stuck to your wooden floor? Use an ice cube to harden the spill,
then gently scrape it away.
• Use stick-on felt pads under the legs of your furniture to prevent scratches and scrubs
Care & Maintenance for Hygge & West WALLPAPER:
All wallpapers are washable using a mild soap that does not contain detergent. Rinse with
clear clean water. Stains caused by grease and oil may not necessarily be removed. Do not
use abrasives.

Note: Due to the ink used in printing, there may be a slight odor to the paper when it is
first unwrapped. The inks and solvents have all been tested and are safe per OSHA
standards. The odor will quickly dissipate during or after hanging. We recommend
ventilating the room well after hanging both to speed drying and to allow the odor to
dissipate more quickly.

1. REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCESSIBLE UNITS, SLEEPING ROOMS AND SUITES [9.2]

Where one bed is provided in a room, maneuvering space at least 36 inches wide is required on both sides of the bed. If two beds are provided, this
maneuvering space is required only between the beds. Note that the requirement for an accessible route to accessible elements and spaces may result in a
36 inch clearance on the other side of double beds nonetheless.

2. Stairs [4.9] EGRESS STAIRS

The requirement for a minimum 48 inch width between handrails is specific to stairs adjacent to areas of rescue assistance and does not apply generally
to stairs covered by 4.9.

3. GRAB BARS [4.16.4]

The back grab bar is most usable from the open side. It must be 36 inches long minimum, installed with one end space a maximum of 6 inches from the
side wall. In existing facilities where the location of the flush valve conflicts with the grab bar, the bar can be split or shifted to the wide side. Side grab
bars, including those that are continuous, must be mounted to extend at least 54 inches from the back wall.

4. ACCESSIBLE ROUTES [9.2.2(2)]

An accessible route at least 36 inches wide must be provided to all accessible elements, including phones and thermostats, provided for use by room
occupants, fixed or built-in storage facilities required to be accessible (closets, drawers, cabinets), and other spaces required to be accessible (living area,
dining area, at least one bathroom and sleeping area, and patios, terraces or balconies, and carports, garages or parking spaces).

5. CLEAR FLOOR SPACE [4.16.2]

the 18 inch water closet centerline is absolute

The 18 inch dimension is measured from the finished wall surface; the thickness of the finish must be considered when the plans are dimensioned.
