The differences in students’ motivation and attitudes toward native and non-native English

speaking teachers.

Native or non-native teachers? The differences in students’ attitudes and motivation.

There is a belief that native English speaking teachers (NEST) are more preferred than non-
native English speaking teachers (NNEST). This might lead to the differences in students’
attitudes and motivation toward NEST or NNEST. In this regard, the present study aimed to
investigate the differences in students’ attitudes and motivation

Students’ Motivation and attitudes to learn English in general (20 items) 1-20

To analyse students’ motivation and attitudes.

To know if students are motivated or not to learn English.

Attitudes toward learning English and native speakers

1. Learning English is really great.


2. I really enjoy learning English.
3. English is an important part of the school programme.
4. I plan to learn as much English as possible.
5. I love learning English.
6. I hate English.
7. I would rather spend my time on subjects other than French.
8. Learning English is a waste of time.
9. I think that learning English is boring.
10. When I leave school, I shall give up the study of English entirely because I am not
interested in it.

Motivation to learn English

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (Deci and Ryan, 1985).

11. I learn English because I have the impression that English is expected of me.

12. I learn English in order to get a better job.

13. I learn English in order to have a better salary later.


14. I learn English to show myself that I am a good citizen because I can speak English.

15. I learn English because I would feel ashamed if I couldn’t speak English to my American
friends.

16. I learn English because I enjoy knowing more about American or British society and
American or British way of life.

17. I learn English for the pleasure I experience when I do well in English.

18. I learn English for the enjoyment I experience when I understand a difficult idea in
English.
