Chapter – 1

INTRODUCTION

1
EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION

Human resources are the only source of long term competitive advantage for any business
organization. It plays a key role in helping companies deal with a fast-changing competitive
environment. people are a major component of any business and the management of people
is a major part of every manager’s job. It is also the specialized responsibility of the HR
department. Thus Human Resource Management (HRM) is the strategic and coherent
approach to the management of an organization’s most valued assets.

Satisfaction is a normal and uncontrollable reduction in the workforce because of constant

stress, retirement, death, sickness and relocation. In simple words, Satisfaction refers to the
number or rate at which the people leave an organization. It is one method of reducing the
size of workforce without management taking any overt actions. The drawback to reduction
by Satisfaction is that reductions are often unpredictable and can leave gaps in an
organization. Satisfaction is one of the biggest challenges and it represents significant costs
to most organizations. A high Satisfaction reflects poorly on an organization’s ability to
hold on to its people.

Some of them are: career opportunities, proper working environment, psychological

satisfaction, unfair practices in organization, stress etc. Among management-level
employees, the key Satisfaction drivers are such as opportunities for management, ability
of top management, use of skills and abilities and work/family balance. For professional –
level employees, the key Satisfaction drivers are concern about coaching and counseling
from one’s supervisor, clear sense of direction from the company and chance to do
interesting and challenging work. Among clerical level employees, the key Satisfaction
drivers are concern about type of work, use of skills and abilities and opportunity to learn
new skills.

2
Reasons for Satisfaction

It is not easy to find out as to who contributes and who has the control on the Satisfaction
of employees. Various studies/survey conducted indicates that everyone is contributing to
the prevailing Satisfaction. Satisfaction does not happen for one or two reasons. The way
the industry is projected and speed at which the companies are expanding has a major part
in Satisfaction.

Some of the Genuine Reasons are as follows:

 Organizational Matters
 Working Environment
 Job matters
 Salary and other Benefits
 Personal Reason
 Health
 Poaching

 Organizational matters:

The employees always assess the management values, work culture, work practices and
credibility of the organization. The Indian companies do have difficulties in getting the
businesses and retain it for a long time. There are always ups and downs in the business.
When there is no focus and in the absence of business plans, non-availability of the
campaigns makes people to quickly move out of the organization.

 Working environment:

3
Working environment is the most important cause of Satisfaction. Employees expect very
professional approach and international working environment. They expect very friendly
and learning environment. It means bossism; rigid rules and stick approach will not suit
the call center. Employees look for freedom, good treatment from the superiors, good
encouragement, friendly approach from one and all, and good motivation.

 Job matters:
No doubt the jobs today bring lots of pressure and stress is high. The employees leave the
job if there is too much pressure on performance or any work related pressure. It is quite
common that employees are moved from one process to another. They take time to get
adjusted with the new campaigns and few employees find it difficult to get adjusted and
they leave immediately. Monotony sets in very quickly and this is one of the main reasons
for Satisfaction. Youngsters look jobs as being temporary and they quickly change the job
once they get in to their own field. The other option is to move to such other process work
where there is no pressure of sales and meeting service level agreements (SLA). The
employees move out if there are strained relations with the superiors or with the
subordinates or any slightest discontent.

 Salary and other benefits:

Moving from one job to another for higher salary, better positions and better benefits are
the most important reasons for Satisfaction. The employees expect salary revision once in
4-6 months and if not they move to other organizations.

 Personal reasons:
The personal reasons are many and only few are visible to us. The foremost personal
reasons are getting married or falling in love or change of place. The next important
personal reason is going for higher education. Most of the BE, MCA and others appear for
4
GATE examination or other examinations and once they get cleared they quickly move
out.

 Health
Health is another aspect, which contributes for Satisfaction. Employees do get affected
with health problems like sleep disturbances, indigestion, headache, throat infection and
gynecological dysfunction for lady employees. Employees who have allergic problems and
unable to cope with the AC hall etc. will tend to get various other health problems and
loose interest to work.

 Poaching:
The demand for trained and competent manpower is very high. Poaching has become very
common. The big companies target employees of small companies. The placement
agencies have good days for doing more business.

Statement of the Problem

Employee Satisfaction has become a major concern for all organization because if
employees leave the organization frequently, its productivity as well as profitability gets
affected. As a result, retaining existing employees has become a key business issue.
Therefore, employee Satisfaction is become one the biggest hurdles in the growth and
development of Marks and Spencer Reliance India Ltd and pantaloons.

RESARCH
METHODOLOGY

13
Research Design

Research Design is the blueprint for the selection, measurement and analysis of data. It
guides the entire flow of activities from hypothesis development to final analysis of data.
The project involved an applied research design as the problem was known and a more
qualitative analysis was involved.

Location

Location for survey in marks and spencer is Connaught Place, New Delhi and for survey
in pantaloons is Cross River Mall, New Delhi.

Target Population

Target population for the survey are the employees from Marks and spencer and
Pantaloons.

Sample size

Total 70 employees were selected for survey. In which, 35 were from Marks and Spencer
and 35 were from Pantaloons.

14
Sampling Plan
Data was collected with the help of convenience sampling survey

In collection of data, convenience sampling method was used to collected the data due to
easily available sample in the company.

Convenience Sampling
Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling technique where subjects are selected
because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher.

The subjects are selected just because they are easiest to recruit for the study and the
researcher did not consider selecting subjects that are representative of the entire
population

In all forms of research, it would be ideal to test the entire population, but in most cases,
the population is just too large that it is impossible to include every individual. This is the
reason why most researchers rely on sampling techniques like convenience sampling, the
most common of all sampling techniques. Many researchers prefer this sampling technique
because it is fast, inexpensive, easy and the subjects are readily available.

In this survey, data was collected by those people who were easily available to the
researcher.

15
Data collection
For the study both primary data and secondary data have been used. The primary data was
collected from staffs of the organizations. The secondary data was collected from the
company records, brochures, journals, magazines and websites.

Data Collection Tools

The tools of data collection translate the research objectives into specific questions/ items,
the responses to which will provide the data required to achieve the research objectives.
Information gathered through the tools provides descriptions of characteristics of
individuals, institutions or other phenomena under study. Data Tools Refers to the device
used to collect data, such as a paper questionnaire or computer assisted interviewing
system. Methodologies used to identify information sources and collect information during
an evaluation. In this survey, data is collected through the Questionnaires.

Data collected during the period of period of February 2016.

CONCLUSION

49
CONCLUSION

Satisfaction is considered to be one of the biggest challenges of all companies. Most

employees leave their work for reasons other than money. i.e. they give importance to
factors like working condition, job satisfaction and also for the opportunities that allow
them to use and develop their skills. This research throws light into the fact that when
Satisfaction is high, productivity as well as profitability gets affected. Thus adequate
measures should be taken to delve deep into the problems faced by employees and try to
resolve them. Identifying the problems and dealing with them in a relevant manner will
help Marks And Spencer Reliance India ltd to overcome the problems of Satisfaction. High
salaries, better financial and health benefits, perks and development opportunities can also
go a long way in arresting Satisfaction.
