Concept Statement
The design will capture the essence that the building was at one point
in time. The design will be a colorful space with a modern touch of grey
inter mixed. The colors will be comfortable for relaxing, resting and
leisurely activities. Each unit will be uniquely decorated, but the style
will be unified throughout the whole space. As many of the original
elements of the structure that can be salvaged will be. The goal of the
project is to bring the old into the new.
Color Palettes
This color palette begins with grey
tones. Yellow was a common, bright
color back in the 1800s and it was
usually brought out in the oak
flooring. Touches and pops of deep
green or blue also connect the era
to the modern day. These colors are
bright, but comfortable. Brown will
also be an added color to this
unique color scheme.
Color Palettes
The second palette is cooler than
the last. Blue was a very popular
color back in the 1800s and it
closely will match darker wood
flooring. Elements of grey will be
introduced here to add a modern
touch to the palette. Greens and
teals help create movement and
depth, but they also help keep the
space cool.

Justification
Which of elements and principles (light, color, line, texture, balance,
proportion, harmony, etc.) are dominant and subdominant in the design, and
how do they support the concept?

I desired color to be the statement piece of this project. While the details of
the Federal style are clearly pronounced throughout the assignment, I
desired to twist the style toward a more modern look. The balance between
modern and Federal is even and the character of the building itself is clearly
understood. Harmony is also very dominant throughout the space to provide
the eye with a symmetrical view of the space. The floor plan is very even on
each side and the details throughout the space offer harmony as well. I
desired the space to have clear lines—with detail—as well.
Justification
How does your design reflect the culture and diversity of the client who will
occupy the space? How do the furniture, finishes, lighting selections, and
custom elements meet the needs of the women and children living in the
transitional housing?

Since this is a women’s shelter, I chose more feminine finishes and designs.
The color pallet chosen is more feminine and the wall paper incorporates
feminine colors and designs as well. The light fixtures especially were also
chosen with women in mind. Jewels, crystals, and other sparkling elements
were added in to accommodate a more classy eye. The furniture was also
chosen with women in mind. The space includes comfortable places to sit
and lounge and functional pieces for adequate clothing storage.
Justification
How did universal design application, code, or egress requirements and
environmental design choices influence the decisions you made
throughout the design process?

In order for the apartments to have bedrooms in the back, windows

had to be installed per fire code. ADA requirements require there to be
handrails by all toilets and showers. They also required 5’ minimum
space to turn a wheelchair around. I chose LVT for the flooring simply
because it will last longer. Longer-lasting means less wear and tear.
Plus, it’s a natural material.
Justification
• Be sure to fill in your design fee on the cost-estimating sheet based on your
hourly fee multiplied by the hours you worked on the project. Then take your
total budget minus the costs of the selections, construction and new systems,
permits, contingencies, and your design fee (see Assignment Notes for Week 3
Assignment 1). Discuss if you are under budget and where you could add to the
design or if you went over the original budget and where you could edit the
design to be closer to the budget.

I believe my client is actually right on the money considering the demographic of

the area. My services are lower considering my educational level at $90.00/hr for
design. Their budget has some astronomical numbers on it but nothing awful. In
hind sight though, some of the lighting fixtures may have been able to be slimmed
down to allow for additional room in the budget for better kitchen appliances and
other useful tools. Perhaps even desks in the south room for workstations. Or a
play place for children.
Reflection
This class was challenging for me. My grade probably reflects it, but I’ll admit
I spent a lot of time trying to understand the methods presented to me.
Working at a firm for almost a year now, I see how our designers operate and
do certain tasks. These tasks are always similar to what I learn in these
classes, but they are executed differently and—at times—more efficiently. I
have a difficult time sometimes with adapting to a different mindset when
I’m used to working in one environment for 40 hours a week. I’m not saying
our way is correct or not, but it is different. Overall, I feel like I’ve once again
grown slightly more confident in my residential designs. This has allowed me
to apply what I know to my work at my job. I can suggest new ideas and
methods to my fellow designers we work to solve problems. Specifically, I’ve
learned more about budgets and client billing with this class. I was already
previously familiar with it, but now it’s more set in stone.
