Tutorial Questions

1. The heat capacity at constant volume of hydrogen sulphide at low pressure is given as
𝐶𝑣 (𝑘𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙 ∙ ℃) = 0.0252 + 1.542 × 10−5 𝑇 − 3.012 × 10−9 𝑇 2
Where T is in ºC. A quantity of H2S is kept in a piston with an initial temperature, pressure
and volume equal to 25ºC, 2.00 atm and 3.00 liters respectively.

a. Calculate the heat in kJ required to raise the gas temperature from 25ºC to 1000ºC if
the heating takes place at constant volume.
b. For a closed system at constant pressure with negligible kinetic and potential energy
changes, 𝑄 = ∆𝐻. Determine the Cp relation for H2S, assuming ideal gas behavior.
Hence, calculate the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of hydrogen
sulphide from 25ºC to 1000ºC.
c. What is the physical significance of the difference between the Q values calculated in
parts (a) and (b).

2. Saturated Steam at 300ºC is used to heat a co-currently flowing stream of methanol vapor
from 65ºC to 260ºC in an adiabatic heat exchanger. The flow rate of methanol is 5,500
standard liters per minute and the steam comes out as saturated liquid at 90ºC.
a. Calculate the required flow rate of steam in m3/min.
b. Calculate the rate of heat transfer from the water to the methanol in kW.

The Cp relation for methanol vapor is given as

𝐶𝑝 (𝑘𝐽/𝑚𝑜𝑙 ∙ ℃) = 0.04293 + 8.301 × 10−5 𝑇 − 1.87 × 10−8 𝑇 2 − 8.03 × 10−12 𝑇 3
