PART II
I chose to you a light yellow in the reception area with a decorative wall finish on the north and south walls. Yellow
represents cheerful, happy, and joy so I wanted the entrance to represent that. The juice bar will have an orange color
that also represents happiness and it also represents enthusiasm. A wooden wall finish will also be displayed behind the
bar. I felt that the carpet should be displayed in the retail area, making it warm and inviting. In the Women’s locker
room, I chose another bold color-red. Being really big on the meaning of colors, Red can symbolize intense strength,
aggression, and courage. I wanted the women’s locker room to exciting, encouraging, and be a place that they enjoyed.
One of the walls will have a stone wall finish, which will compliment the red.
In reflecting back on this course, it taught me a lot about what is needed when designing a commercial space. It requires a lot of
research. I learned a lot about green design, LEED, finish legend, and the finish schedule. I am grateful for the experience but
often wish the classes were a bit longer because in order to retain a lot of the information, I need to practice applying each
assignment more than once. In the beginning, I was not understanding how to apply the finish legend and schedule but as time
progress, it became very clear. I have never been a patient person, but I realize you have to be patient because it requires a lot of
research and decision making. There were a couple of times I chose certain materials that would not work in the space, so I had
to start over.
One concept that I take away from this course when choosing paint samples, review them under different light sources. Also to
select paints that are a shade lighter for the intended application. Another thing that I struggled with was the estimation part of
the assignment. I don’t fully understand but that is one thing that I will continue striving to accomplish. And lastly, I will take
away applying the maintenance for all of the products.
