Commander Rules

Commander is a format that originated in Magic the Gathering and has since been adopted and edited by many
Pokemon players. This variation was originally from mmxxiii, and has been edited to include GX cards and now
includes a rule on Primes.
The Format is listed as Unlimited so many cards banned in other formats are legal here
There are 3 banned cards: Forest of Giant Plants, Shiftry NXD, and Archeops NVI

Pokémon:

● In this variation of Pokémon you are to have 1 commander. Your commander sets the typing for your deck.
A Commander Pokémon MUST be an EX, GX, Legend, or Prime, and it is the only
EX/GX/Prime/Legend you are allowed in the game.

● Exception to 1 EX: You are allowed to have 1 Mega EX that can used to evolve your Commander. If you use
a mega pokémon, you MUST have it’s pre-evolution EX in your deck. If you use a Mega Pokémon in your
deck, it is considered as part of your Commander (not a seperate commander).

● You are only allowed 1 of each other Pokémon Card in your deck. You are allowed to play more than one of
the same Pokémon if each card has different attacks. For example, if you have a Bunnelby with Trip over,
you are still allowed to use a Bunnelby with Dig because they have different moves.

Typing:

● All Pokémon must share a type with their commander or be normal type. Normal types are allowed in every
deck.
○ Examples: if your commander is Yveltal EX, your deck must contain only Dark or Colorless types of
Pokémon. If your commander is Gardevoir EX and Mega Gardevoir from Steam Siege, you can
use Fairy, Psychic, and Colorless types.

● Dual type Pokémon are considered either type listed on their card.

○ Example: Bisharp from Steam Siege may be used with a Commander like Metagross GX or
Umbreon GX.

● For the purpose of commander, all energies are considered colorless. (See energy section for explanation)

Trainer Cards:

● You are allowed 1 of each trainer card. If a trainer card has the same text as another, but they are different
cards you are still allowed to use 1 of each (Pokémon has a rule against Juniper and Sycamore in the same
deck, that is the only exception to this rule). Ex: Cynthia + Professor Oak’s New Theory = Legal

Energy Cards:

● Regular Energy: You are allowed as you want of any type (within the limitations of the game)
○ Ex. you are not forced to have a certain energy type in your deck, if you deck is fire you are free to
use any other energy types in it
● Special Energy: You are allowed 1 of each special energy
