Final Portfolio

Introduction

In the portfolio, the aim was to craft projects that could be further perfected over time. I

revised WP 1 and 3 in this portfolio in order to create better projects overall. In WP1 I

implemented more information regarding vocabulary that is found within the class to further my

argument because the project itself is written about a specific lexis. In WP2 I incorporated a new

article into my Genre translation as well as the Analysis itself as a result of not reading the

prompt thoroughly. The revision process was long and arduous as it included feedback from you

and from my friends around me. With the help of you and my friends I was able to realize that I

have many writing flaws to work on. The main ones including reiterating my points too often

and creating a repetitive essay; The second being not including enough information to support

my points. With that being said, I hope to be able to work on these flaws in order to improve as a

whole.

COVER LETTER

Dear Masha,

In my Opinion, I think that I indeed have grown as a writer. This class has had a lot to do

with it because without this introductory course I would still be stuck writing the way I did back

in high school. By memory, my writing in high school consisted of plenty of writing but not a lot

of it had an actual analysis nor actual meaning. I simply put thoughts to paper in order to meet

the word count. This way of writing meant that I had too much everything together and hope that

I would be able to get a good grade out of it. In this class, I am not able to do this. The projects

that you have handed us out all have to be well thought out before we submit it for grading.

Readings throughout the quarter that have enabled me to become a better writer consist of

Janet Boyd’s “Murder! (Rhetorically Speaking)”, Elbow’s “Teaching Thinking by Teaching

Writing” and Irvin’s “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?”. As an exercise Boyd’s articles asks the

reader to transform into a coroner, this will allow one to further their detail gathering skills.

When placing myself into the same position, I noticed that I followed the rest of the individuals

that were named in the article. I also would only be noting down topical analysis of the crime

scene and the body. By putting myself into the actual point of the reading, I was able to note

down that there is more to an explanation which is the analysis that will help me become a better

writer. When put into perspective, it is an easy way to help gather much more detail about

something than I have done before. An example of not particularly writing with enough detail

comes from my first WP where my essay is about a particular lexis; while I do write about the

lexis needed in order to succeed in the class, I did not write enough about the actual terms from

the class. I only touched the topical surface when I could have gone a little further, which I

attempted to do in my revision for this final portfolio. The second reading that was of particular
Final Portfolio

use to me was Elbow’s “Teaching Thinking by Teaching Writing”. I found a portion of this text

to be of great importance throughout the course as it enabled me to create more than beforehand.

The portion I am speaking on is where Elbow tells us to first start of writing in first order. This is

an order where you are capable of writing whatever comes to your mind which you then revise to

answer the prompt. I believe that this helped me the most because I struggle in writing itself. I

tend to be the one who thinks too much about making the writing perfect, and in turn give myself

writers block. With Elbows method I was able to write what came to my mind and then take the

time to go back and revise it to make sense of it. Back in high school I used to force my words

together which created a poor essay. With the Elbow method, I am able to free write all that is in

my head, which in turn allows me to polish it to the needs of the essay I am required to write. For

the most part I wrote my WP2 in this form, I was able to freely write my observations of my

roommates in the translation of the nonfiction text to my firsthand experiences. The last article

that has helped me develop over the course of the quarter has been Irvin’s “What is ‘Academic’

Writing?”. This article enabled me to view myths about writing that enabled me to stress a little

less about writing itself. For example, one particular thing that was stressed to me over the

course of my writing experiences is the five-paragraph essay. In the article we were shown that

each individual assignment is different and not all will need that exact format.

My view on writing has changed from the first time I sat in your room compared to now

in the final stages of the quarter. I used to see writing as pointless and my essays showed that,

now I feel I have a new appreciation for writing as a whole. I now see that there is more to words

being written down, I see them holding a purpose in a message you are attempting to portray. For

example, my WP3 about time wasting held importance because writing that I was able to

question my own time management; As a result of this I also hope whoever reads it will also
Final Portfolio

think about their own management of time. Things that I would continue to work on if I had

more time would include the length of my essays, not extending them only for length, but for

substance. I would have liked to create longer analytically filled essays if there was a substantial

amount of time left for my projects.

Specific Terminology in a Dinosaur Classroom Setting

Over the years, every academic discipline has developed its own language of

communication. [Go to Swales and take out relevant information on discourse communities and

why they are created] To ease and improve communication, scholars employ a specific

terminology. For the purpose of this assignment, I chose to focus on the terminology used in an

Earth-7 class held at UCSB that is also referred to as Dinosaurs. By examining terminology of

the Earth-7 class, I argue that …

This class takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 PM to 4:45 PM. It is an

hour and fifteen minutes of note taking on a significant amount of information. Due to the book

being about extensive ever-changing material, our professor has told us himself not to purchase

the book for the class. Over the course of class, students note down information from the slides

that Dr. Luna, the class professor, has provided for the students. Through the usage of the slides,

Dr. Luna requires iClicker questions, a form of polling, in order to see how well students are

comprehending the concepts and terminology. Answering these questions alone is a form of a

student to gain points in the class as it is a form of participation. The professor views this polling

system as a way of viewing where the class stands on the given information, there are points in

the presentations where Dr. Luna pauses and asks the class if there is anything that needs further

explanation.

This information then allows us to be able to complete the lab portion of the class on
Final Portfolio

Wednesday from 12:00 PM to 12:50 PM. The lab is a summary of what is talked about during

lecture. According to the professor himself, the lab portion of the course was built to further the

knowledge that was noted during lecture (Dr. Luna). Virtually, the slide presentations are a vital

source of information for a student hoping to do well in the class as they enable a student to

further study what was talked about in class.

It is fairly clear that in this class there are specific lexis to learn as it is a class full of

information; this information coming from a paleontological viewpoint. This viewpoint is proven

to be true because the professor himself, Dr. Luna, is a paleontologist. He has traveled the world

researching the world behind the world we live in today. This research has required one to learn

a new way of communication, as there is much specific terminology to understand. There were

once species that existed before us and in turn this caused researchers to give specific names to

the species of the past.

[I cut that paragraph because the paper is rather short and we can't include extra information

about your research process.]

In an interview conducted on February 12th with Dr. Luna, greater insight into the

course's lexis aspect was provided as Dr. Luna highlighted the aspects through a series of

questions that ranged from the difficulties of the course to how difficult it was for him to learn

and study within his specific lexis. According to Dr. Luna, the terminology of a specialized field

is not what truly matters, it is the understanding of concepts that is important in class (Dr. Luna).

This stems from the fact that knowing a word's definition, which in some cases can be quite

useful, will not be useful in paleontology (Dr. Luna). The reasoning behind this was made clear

to me during my interaction with Dr. Luna; Dr. Luna claims that Paleontology has terminology

that represents specific details in a greater aspect. Understanding terminology is very important
Final Portfolio

in any specialized field, and this develops from the ideals that a specialized field is concentrated

heavily on a lot of information.

Without actual understanding of words in the class, a student will struggle and will not be enjoy

their grade. For example, a word such as taxon is defined as being a branch that is used in

paleontology as means of classification. A student may be able to understand what a taxon is by

definition and can even know the word enough to recite it. However, according to Dr. Luna a

student being able to recite a word is useless to him in paleontology because a lot goes into

understanding a taxon as it is a major part of a cladogram and it is used to describe relationships

between species ascending from a common ancestor (Dr. Luna). These two vocabulary words are

words that have been used throughout the course of our lectures. Understanding cladograms and

taxons proved to be vital as they were concepts that were on the midterm. Had I not understood

these words I would have received a poor grade on the midterm instead of the 84% that I got. On

the contrary, my lab partner received a low grade, this is due to the fact that I am usually the one

who does the majority of the work.

Beyond lectures, paleontologists utilize specific terminology in academic articles. In

[article name], Hitz, Flynn, and Wyss focus on …. To explain this topic, they use terms that an

amateur reader will have difficulty to decipher. For instance, they state, "specimens of a new

taxon, John Bell hatcher, derive from Abanico Formation deposits near Termas del Flaco"(Hitz,

Flynn, Wyss). A professional paleontologist, like Dr. Luna, will be able to read this text with

ease. Yet, as Dr. Luna said, knowing professional terminology did not come at once. He has

spent many years in the field and has gained a lot of experience to be able to communicate

properly. (Luna) [Make a concluding sentence focusing on how experience and time are

important factors in understanding terminology).

Final Portfolio

In conclusion, it is fairly easy to note that it is hard to be considered a part of a group

without fully incorporating oneself into the group. This incorporation aspect comes after

experience and it also helps to get help instead of not doing anything to help yourself understand

what is presented before you. In terms of a lexis in my dinosaur class, it is clear to see that it is

easy to fall behind if no effort is put in to understand concepts and only attempt to memorize a

word by its definition.

WP1 REVISED

Specific Terminology in a Dinosaur Classroom Setting

By examining the terminology of an Earth-7 class at UCSB, I can argue that without actual

understanding of words presented in class, a poor performance will be the result. As for the class

itself, it takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 PM to 4:45 PM. Over the course of

the hour and fifteen minutes, we as students are noting down information from the slides that Dr.

Luna, the class professor, has provided for the students. Dr. Luna has traveled the world

researching the world behind the world we live in today. This research has required one to learn

a new way of communication, as there is much specific terminology to understand. For that

reason he is the person that I interviewed for the purpose of learning more about the literacy

classes and its discipline. Through his guidance, new information was found regarding text he

reads in order to further understanding the literacy of the subject along with the discipline itself.

An important source of information that we gather information from are the slides he

presents with quiz questions. With this, he tracks our progress in order to see how well students

are comprehending the concepts and terminology. Answering these questions alone is a form for

us to gain points in the class as it is a form of participation. The professor views this polling

system as a way of viewing where the class stands on the given information, there are points in

the presentations where Dr. Luna pauses and asks the class if there is anything that needs further

explanation. The information we gather in lecture enables us to complete the lab portion of the

class once a week. The lab is a summary of what is talked about during lecture. According to the

professor himself, the lab portion of the course was built to further the knowledge that was noted

during lecture (Dr. Luna). Virtually, the slide presentations are a vital source of information for a

student hoping to do well in the class.

and study within his specific lexis. According to Dr. Luna, the terminology of a specialized field

is not what truly matters, it is the understanding of concepts that is important in class (Dr. Luna).

When looking at the difference between understanding a word and knowing it, it is fairly clear to

see that there is a major distinction between the two things. According to Dr. Luna, Paleontology

is a course which knowing words is not useful. This stems from the fact that knowing a word's

definition, which in some cases can be quite useful, will not be useful in paleontology (Dr.

Luna). The reasoning behind this was made clear to me during my interaction with Dr. Luna; Dr.

Luna claims that Paleontology has terminology that represents specific details in a greater aspect.

Understanding terminology is very important in any specialized field, and this develops

from the ideals that a specialized field is concentrated heavily on a lot of information. With no

understanding of words presented in class, a student will struggle and will not enjoy their final

grade. For example, a word such as taxon is defined as being a branch that is used in

paleontology as means of classification. A student may be able to understand what a taxon is by

definition and can even know the word enough to recite it. Yet, their is greater importance

behind a taxon because it describes a species with characteristics it holds as well as helping

discern the relationships it holds to other species in respect to their common ancestors.

According to Dr. Luna, a student being able to recite a word is useless to him in paleontology for

the reason of understanding the flexibility of the vocabulary word. A second vocabulary word of

great importance regarding the class itself is Cladogram. A cladogram by definition is a

branching diagram showing the cladistic relationship between a number of species. Knowing this
Final Portfolio

by definition would not help in knowing how to read one; Cladograms are read by looking at the

branches and noting relations between species by looking for common ancestors. When looking

at a cladogram one could potentially find a polytomy. Without understanding how to read a

cladogram, one would not know that a polytomy is an uncertainty in relationships between

species and it is shown by branches extending off a same point. Understanding cladograms and

taxons proved to be vital as they were concepts that were on the midterm. Had I not understood

these words I would have received a poor grade on the midterm instead of the 84% that I got. On

the contrary, my lab partner received a low grade, this is due to the fact that he does not put in

the same effort in understanding the words.

In the following article given to me by Dr. Luna, there is information based on

determining the names of a newly found species. Within the document, it is fairly easy to

recognize that it is a document that is difficult to read as it is specialized writing. With that being

said, a reader must be able to decipher some words he or she might be able to understand using

understanding. A word used in this text that was used above is taxon, “Specimens of

a new taxon, John Bell Hatcher, derive from Abanico Formation deposits near Termas del

Flaco”(Hitz, Flynn, Wyss). This is text that a paleontologist would be able to read with ease as

Dr. Luna said, he has had various years of experience in the field and at one point he had trouble

reading these types of documents; It all became easier to him over time with the help of advisors

and time in the field that was approximately over 10 years(Dr. Luna). This time has enabled my

professor to gain experience in the field allowing him to pick up the knowledge that makes it

easy to read. Unalike to a professional, this document is difficult to read for a regular student like

me because we have no long-time experience.

Time Usage in the Lives of College Students

When looking at the lives of College students there are various points of information to

expect. Every College student differs from the group as each individual comes from various

different regions from the United States of America and in some cases different parts of the

world. Each student has different habits, ways of communication, and most important for this

piece; How they manage their time as a whole. In addition to the statement made previously, I

have gathered information from first hand experiences to further my argument. With time

management in hand, first hand research was done on 3 individuals in my personal friend group;

Each individual will be given a pseudonym in order to not reveal their real identity. Rather than

gather information directly from them, I have decided to take a step back in the process and

simply observe them; With this method I will get to see how they act during free time, without

having them respond to my questions with higher regards of their time management. With this, I

will be able to compare the efficiency in their free time, and in turn enable the reader to reflect

on their perspective of time and how they can better manage their own in accordance to the

following examples.

In the very first case, I decided to observe my roommate Bart; he is a person with a

unique and strong character. He is one who enjoys to swim, tell us jokes, eat, and even play

video games. Above the rest of the list, Bart includes studying as his highest priority. There are

nights where I have seen him sleep at 3 in the morning because he wants to work ahead in order

to stay on top of things. I share the same Chemistry course with him and he manages to finish

time consuming assignments that are due in a week in one sitting. Bart has the highest work rate
Final Portfolio

amongst all of my friends and because of this he is a 4.0 student as a Chemical engineer. Not to

mention that UCSB’s chemical engineering program is known to be one of the best and only falls

second to The California Institute of Technology. This success is due to Bart constantly working

on homework and studying the material that is taught in class. Had he use his extra time

unwisely, the difficulty of such a prestigious major would increase drastically.

On the contrary, a friend who manages their time completely different is Travis. I had

class with Travis my first quarter of College and his work ethic and ideals were different. This

individual believed that work was completed only to further his time during the weekends. Even

if it meant turning in mediocre work. The free time that Travis had was used exclusively to party,

on one account I recall being called at 3 in the morning to help him get home. The goal of the

party scene for Travis is to push his tolerance to new levels. I went with Travis to parties every

weekend and grew tired of this repetition; I decided to devote my extra time to studies rather

than drink for the purpose of pushing my limits.

As I stayed home and, in my room more often, I was enabled to view my second

roommates time usage with greater observance. With this individual I tend to do more of my

work with due to the fact that he maintains himself glued to his PC as he is what we would call a

tech nerd. Keeping this in mind Rick stays in the room and hangs out with no other individuals

outside our group. While accomplishing the shared work of Pre-Bio majors. Rick occupies

himself playing computer games while he is not studying or working on homework. He has

stayed up until seven in the morning gaming, and at times sleeps until 4pm on the weekends. He

tackles his workload in a different manner and at times loses sleep because of this exact reason.

With the gathered information, I have determined while we are all College students, there

are various differences with the way time is managed over the course of our College lives here.
Final Portfolio

Time is a measurement of our lives that can be used up and not recovered. It’s what you manage

to make from it: It can be used unwisely and wisely, and in my three experiences there are

individuals who took advantage of the time and were rewarded for it, in other cases wasting time

proved to be detrimental as it led to loss of sleep and mediocre work. With this new perspective

of time seen through the lives of my peers, time has proven itself to become more of importance

as getting stuff done for the purpose of the future sounds a whole lot better than the satisfaction

of today.

Genre Translation

The following is regarding information based on a short story found on the

internet. This is an article I came across the internet when I looked up short stories hoping I

could find something good to translate into a new genre. I actually really enjoyed this piece as it

gave me a new perspective on time, the short story that was read is The Time-Sweepers by Ursula

Wills-Jones. The genre of this piece is fiction based as it includes blue made up characters who

work in picking up wasted time. This short story is written to be directed to any individual who

will not only hear, but actually listen. Listening and hearing are two completely different things

as it is fairly easy to just hear someone talk and zone out what they are saying, instead of paying

attention to their discussion. Listening is essential in many cases, for one it comes in handy when

you are getting criticized; One will tend to block out what is being said, and this is all due to not

wanting to hear your faults.

Through small blue characters, the short story aims to let individuals know about how time can

be easily wasted if they are not living it up and enjoying what they are doing. In addition to the

statement made previously, we can further argue that this could be in the community of people
Final Portfolio

not enjoying what they are currently doing with their lives. The indispensable purpose of this text

is to inform individuals who chose to read this piece about the actions they may need to take

when managing time.

The main goal is to have incorporated this article into a documentary-based piece about time

management. The topic of time management is essential to have been covered as I am a College

student who is surrounded by College students whom include my friends. This is important

because with this translation into real world application time will be taken into heavy

consideration. Over the course of a couple of weeks I decided to step back and observe my

friends time usage. With that being said, the new audience of this new genre translation is aimed

towards College students. This new intended audience differs from the previous as now there is a

call to action for College students to clearly think about how they are managing their time by

observing my friends time usage.

The reasoning behind translating the fiction-based genre into the documentary-based genre came

heavily from the College standpoint. I wanted to see what actions my counterparts were making

in time management. I believe this genre will effectively communicate with my intended

audience because other students shall be questioned and will take time management into

consideration.

Information from the original text that I have decided to purge before translating it into this new

genre are the blue creatures. That being said from the actions of attempting to make a

documentary-based genre which would not have room for the blue mythical creatures. Another

piece I have decided to get rid of is the satisfaction aspect of wasting time. In the text, it is seen

that it is okay to do whatever you want with your time because if you enjoy the time then it

becomes worthwhile instead of wasted. Once translated towards the College life, it would not
Final Portfolio

make sense to leave this in because as students we do not have that much time to waste simply

for enjoyment.

For the remainder of the text I decided to leave a lot of the original information in the translation

as it makes sense for an individual to grind out some homework while other people waste time,

leaving this individual to be headed in a forward direction. In the essence of complications, I do

not believe that there were many challenges as this genre translation is straight forward for the

most part. From my experience writing this translation, I learned that genre is extremely versatile

and can be manipulated efficiently to heed the needs of the targeted audience. One concern I am

kept in mind as I observed my roommates was getting caught paying more attention to them. A

skill from the text speaking on interviews that I have managed to learn is the confidential aspect,

I managed to observe each individual and gather information under a name that will not link

them.

The following is regarding information based on a short story found on the internet along

with an article that gives tips to College students. I came across these two articles on the internet

when I looked up short stories hoping I could find something good to translate into a new genre.

As for the article I read on about tips for a College student, I noted that there are ways for

one to manage time and that these can be a stress relief when used correctly. The first is just

ensuring that you will have enough time to complete the tasks that you have presented before

you. There is no need to be doing everything last minute when it can be concluded at the

moment. The second tip is to be able to manage your own personal time, this is important

because you cannot put continuous stress upon yourself and not expect to tire out. Every once in

while it should be okay to find a way to relieve some stress. The last one is to make sure you are

not doing something that will keep you up late at night as it can make you tired during the day,

which leads to taking naps and taking time out of your day.

The main goal is to have incorporated these articles into a documentary-based piece
