INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD

Directions: Using the template below, describe how you would use the interactive whiteboard in your
future classroom. Consider if your ideas is teacher centered or student centered. The learning activities
should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students’
work.
Name: Subira Nisbeth
Grade Level: 6th
Content Area: Language Arts/Reading
Standard(s) Addressed:

ELAGSE6L4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases
based on grade 6 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. a. Use context (e.g.,
the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word’s position or function in a sentence) as a clue
to the meaning of a word or phrase. d. Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word
or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary)
Bloom’s Level of Critical Thinking:
__X_ Remembering __X_ Understanding ___ Applying ___ Analyzing ___ Evaluating ___ Creating
Description of how to implement in the class:

Using a premade template from SMART Exchange, I will customize a game of Deal or No Deal based off
of words from our current text. Through this game, students must be able to not only determine the meaning
of the word, but they must also be able to use the word in a sentence and determine how the vocabulary
word relates to our current text. Based on the student’s response, the team will receive full, partial, or no
points. The complexity of the questions forces students to really think about the words. They have to know
the words, but they have to know how to make connections with the text. Being able to do this helps
students actually meet the standard because they are learning the word not just memorizing. The winning
team will receive an incentive.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):

The LoTi level for this activity can be a 2; however, with the variation of question components that focus
on content and process, the level is a 3 especially since it forces students to use a higher order of thinking to
reach the desired response.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal learning goal is to successfully use the IWB technology within the classroom. I have not had
very much experience actually exploring what all an IWB could do. I hope to learn the various ways to use
an IWB so that I can not only make learning engaging, but I can also share my knowledge with my students
so that they too can be tech savvy.
Importance of technology:

Students learn in a multitude of ways. Using the IWB allows students to be hands on while receiving audio
and visual aids. Without this technology, students would be subject to single modal learning in which
instruction only appeals to one style of learning. With the IWB, both the teacher and the student can interact
with the lesson, giving learning connections and meaning. This particular lesson has a sole purpose to
explore the IWB, so no other major technologies will be used. However, in future uses, other technology
can be successfully paired with the IWB.

Reflection:

From this experience, I have learned that Interactive Whiteboards can serve as a great tool for student
engagement throughout the class period. I was able to utilize the online resources to gather ideas from other
teachers as well as formulate ideas on ways to implement this technology into the classroom. I enjoyed
using the random name selector. A student could tap the IWB to select a topic for his/her group or choose
to see what group they will be put in. I also learned different features like writing on the board to make
notes on a projected text and I even learned how to erase using the special eraser. I have gained a great deal
of knowledge on IWB that extends beyond it just being a screen, but how it can be an effective tool for
student learning.
