Exp. No. 2: Study Of Diode I-V Characteristics With Multisim

Part-1:

1. From the plots, determine rD (DC resistance) at three different diode voltages for both cases.
Ans:
For Diode D1N4002:

V1 = 1.3826 V
I1 = 7.4323 mA
R1 = 186.02 Ω

V2=2.4748 V
I2=17.8946 mA
R2= 138.28 Ω

V3=3.4895 V
I3=27.8094 mA
R3=125.4791 Ω

For Diode D1N750:

V1 = - 11.8916 V
I1 = - 71.3224 mA
R1 = 166.7302 Ω

V2= - 9.0241 V
I2= - 42.9257 mA
R2= 210.2260 Ω

V3= 11.1687 V
I3= 102.4577 mA
R3= 109.3280 Ω

2. What about the cut in voltage of the diodes?

Ans: The forward voltage at which the current through the junction starts increasing rapidly, is called cut-in
voltage. For a bias less than the Peak Inverse Voltage, the reverse current is very small. Therefore there will
be a definite forward voltage at which the diode starts to conduct significantly.
3. How does the resistance vary with the increase of voltage?
Ans: Voltage is a constant along with resistance.

If you change your resistance value, the only thing that will change is your amp rating. Resistance and
amperage are inversely proportional. As one goes up, the other will come down.

Now if you increase the resistance and still want the same amp readings, you will then have to increase the
amount of voltage going into your circuit, as you have increased the amount of resistance.

4. Does it follow Ohm’s law?

Ans: No. It does not follow Ohm’s law.

Part- 2:

1. What is a Diode? Describe with your own understanding of necessary figures

Ans: A diode is a specialized electronic component with two electrodes called the anode and the cathode.
Most diodes are made with semiconductor materials such as silicon, germanium, or selenium. Some diodes
are comprised of metal electrodes in a chamber evacuated or filled with a pure elemental gas at low
pressure. Diodes can be used as rectifiers, signal limiters, voltage regulators, switches, signal modulators,
signal mixers, signal demodulators, and oscillators. The fundamental property of a diode is its tendency to
conduct electric current in only one direction.

2. I-V Characteristics of Diode for Diode model D1N4002

Ans: D1N4002 Diode, the maximum current carrying capacity is 1A it withstands peaks up to 30A. Hence
we can use this in circuits that are designed for less than 1A. The reverse current is 5uA which is negligible.
It can withstand reverse voltage peak up to 100V.
3. I-V Characteristics of Diode for Diode model D1N750
Ans:

4. AC Characteristics of Diode (V IN, V D and V R on the same sheet).
