Importance

The canton palace was built in the first decade of XX Century. It was the residence
of General Francisco Canton Rosado and his family before they sold it.
The General Canton was a soldier so he fights in the “Guerra de Castas” versus
the Mayan rebellion.
He had haciendas and was a businessman of railways, also he was Yucatan’s
Governor between 1898 and 1902.
In resume General Canton was important for fighting and governing.
The Residence was sold in 1932 to the Yucatan’s government.
Since then the government has used the palace to harbor some institutes. It was
successively school of “Bellas Artes”, elementary school “Hidalgo” and governors
house.
Then was simultaneously home to the institute of archaeology and history of
Yucatan and the library “Crecencio Carrillo y Ancona” in the main floor and the
museum archaeological and historical of Yucatan in the basement.
The first generation of Archaeologist and anthropologist of the school of
anthropological science studied in the high floor while passing the sixty’s years.
The regional museum of Anthropology of Yucatan was opened on December of
1959.
Since 1980 the exhibition about the Mayan prehispanic society is in the main floor
while in the high floor there are temporary exhibitions.
Property Description

The museum occupies a building of the early XX century. The architecture of the
palace is from ecletic style knows as “Beaux Arts”, that have his apogee in the
“Belle Epoque” from Europe and the porfiriato. It is believe that the original plans
were traces by the Italian architect Enrico Deserti and the Yucatecan engineer and
architect, Manuel G. Canton was in charge of the construction.
The General Francisco Canton, Yucatan´s governor, lived until his dead.
The majesty of the building not only stands out for its size, but also for the
materials used in its construction: plaster, marble in various shades, fine finishes in
ceilings, Doric and Ionic columns, a beautiful staircase carved in white marble and
outdoor gardens.

The museum has the next services:

 Guided Tours in Spanish for schools and special groups with a prior
agenda.
 Conferences and book presentations.
 Student programs for social service, professional and voluntary practices.
 Bathrooms and elevator for disabled
 It has an independent bookstore working at the same time the museum
"Educal"
Theme
In 1980 it becomes the seat of the regional museum of anthropology, better known
as canton palace. Their exposure, focused on archaeological material shaped
pieces of the prehispanic culture. From 2012, all its contents were changed.
designed to present important temporary exhibitions of various themes.

Today, 56 years after its opening, the Regional Museum of Anthropology Canton
Palace, is an example of harmony between past and present, as a dynamic space
that offers exhibitions, lectures, cultural events and academics to promote
knowledge about the culture of prehispanic and contemporary people.

The Canton Palace is certainly an emblem of the city of Merida, capital of Yucatan,
is a link connecting the past with the present to achieve project it into the future.

Schedules
The entry times in the Canton Palace are 8 am to 5 pm; on Mondays, the museum
is closed.
When a group of students is on a visit to the museum, should request a
reservation, since such visits is done with a guide.

Price
The entrance fee to the museum is $ 52 per person, accept payment by credit card
and debit cards. The children under 12, students and older people with ID are
exempt of the payment

On Sundays, the ticket is free
