General information of Master Thesis projects at REINERTSEN

Since its introduction in Sweden in 1990, there has been a cooperative scheme
between REINERTSEN and the Universities in Sweden. REINERTSEN is a frequent
supervisor of Master Thesis projects, resulting in a number of Master Thesis projects
every year for the last sixteen years.

Supervision of Master Thesis projects is an important part of REINERTSEN’s

marketing towards the future engineers currently being students. The Master Thesis
work is usually carried out at the REINERTSEN offices, in close contact with the
supervisor, and the subjects studied are usually related to past or coming projects. In
order to apply for a Master Thesis project at REINERTSEN, follow the instructions
below.

We will need the following information:

• Description of the applicants with CV (personal letter, no more than one A4-
page).
• Copy of grades from University.
• Information about which Master Thesis project(s) that is/(are) of interest.
• When during the year you would like to do your Master Thesis at REINERTSEN
and how flexible you are in this.

If you are a pair of two persons applying together, make sure that your applications
clearly state this and that your information is sent in together.

To apply for the Master Thesis projects presented herein, send in your application by
email to:

Reinertsen, Subsea Infrastructure

Subsea engineering has been one of
REINERTSENs most important market areas
for more than 25 years. The company has
developed a comprehensive knowledge within
this area, covering numerous of subsea pipeline
projects mainly on the Norwegian continental
shelf but also in other regions of the world.
REINERTSEN contribute with expertise in all
phases of oil and gas field development projects,
from feasibility studies, cost estimates &
schedules to detail engineering and offshore
supervision.

REINERTSENs main expertise within subsea

field developments are analyses and design of
pipelines, umbilicals, pipeline termination
structures (PLET/PLEM), risers, riser-bases,
protective structures, GRP structures and spools.

FE analysis for design of heating cable arrangement on subsea

pipelines

Today there is a lot of offshore infrastructure for processing, on and off loading and
transport of oil and gas. When exploring new finds, there is a desire to use existing
infrastructure if possible. This may result in a rather long distance of pipeline transport
from the well to processing facilities. The long distances result in a temperature drop of
transported oil and gas. This in turn means a risk for formation of wax and asphaltene plugs
stopping up the production.

A Direct Electric Heating (DEH) cable can be used to reduce the risk for plugs in the
pipeline by increasing the temperature.

Reinertsen have participated in design and planning of successful installations of pipelines

fitted with DEH-cable. However there is an interest in improved design methods and to
gain further design experience by utilising existing design tools. One of the important
factors when designing a DEH-cable is to have a sufficient overlength, or slack in the cable.
In this manner excessive tension in the cable can be avoided when the pipeline is subject to
global buckling due to thermal expansion. On the other hand, too much overlength implies
excessive curvature in the cable when the pipeline is shut down for service.

The following tasks for a master thesis are identified:

• Establish boundaries of temperature increase where overlength needs to be used.
• Find a relationship between temperature increase and optimal overlength.
• Investigate FE modelling techniques to speed-up FE computations.
• Present the results at a seminar and as a written report.

FE-computations for design of large diameter PIP (pipe-in-pipe) for

subsea applications

To make use of recent discoveries of subsea oil and gas reservoirs pipe-in-pipe solutions
are being more and more demanded by the offshore industry.

Inside the production pipe where high variations in pressure and temperature are present,
wax and asphaltene-formation due to temperature drop may stop the production and is a big
challenge.

In order to avoid problems with wax and asphaltene-formation, the production pipe is
paired with an outer pipe with advanced insulation materials in-between. Such a solution is
called PIP (pipe-in-pipe). The high thermal insulation achieved by the PIP is the major
reason for this kind of pipeline design. There are also other advantages, such as higher
safety against leakage and better buckling resistance at thermal expansion.

Reinertsen have participated in design and planning of successful installations of PIP, for
example at the Marulk and Smørbukk fields. However there is a need to further investigate
the limits where PIP is the most feasible solution. There is also a need to study possibilities
to extend the design range towards larger diameters.

The following tasks regarding the thesis are identified:

• Make a parameter study by varying design parameters on a global FE-model in
Simla.
• Utilise results above to find design limits of pipe-in-pipes.
• Use the global FE-model to investigate extended design range utilising bulkheads.
• FE-computations, on one design case on a local model, using the FE-software
Ansys.
• Compare results of the global and local model.
• Present the results at a seminar and as a written report.

Limit state analysis of trawl

impact on subsea pipelines

Free spanning subsea pipelines are exposed to various external loads, for instance; waves,
currents and trawl equipment. Trawl boards and clump weights, weighing tonnes, are
dragged at the bottom of the ocean and might interfere with a pipeline. In order to protect
the pipelines, subsea rock installation for free span supports are performed. Rock
installation, which is an effective but expensive method, reduces the gap between the sea
bed and the pipeline and the risk of failure due to trawl impact.

In order to determine the amount of rock dumping, design codes are used. The current
methodology is a deterministic approach based on a worst case scenario. This approach
gives conservative results, i.e. large amounts of rock. Another way of designing is to use
probabilistic design with a prescribed limit state. This gives a failure probability based on
various sources of scatter instead of a deterministic utilization ratio.

What is proposed in this thesis is to evaluate the limit state used for trawling of free
spanning pipelines.

The following tasks are to be performed in the thesis:

• Build a FE-model of a free spanning pipeline.
• Evaluate the current limit state used.
• Identify and quantify the different sources of scatter present in trawling.
• Evaluate the design codes currently used.
• Develop a methodology for determining the necessity of rock dumping due to trawl
impact.
• Present the results in a seminar and in a written report.
