Factors that Affect Rates of Reaction....
In a chemical reaction, the time necessary for a quantity of a product to form
or for a given quantity of reactants to react is called the rate of reaction.
(The rate is the speed at which a change happens either quickly or slowly).
1) The concentration of reactants and the rate of reaction.
If there is a larger concentration of reactant particles, there is more of a
chance that they will collide with each other. A larger number of collisions
equals a quicker rate of reaction. So, the more concentrated the reactants
the faster the rate of reaction (and the less concentrated the reactants the
slower the rate of reaction).
2) Surface area and the rate of reaction
Surface area is the amount of area of a sample of matter that is visible and
able to react. Increasing the surface area increases the number of collisions
between molecules and therefore the rate of reaction.
3) Temperature and the rate of reaction
Lowering the thermal energy of the reactants slows down the rate of
reaction in a chemical reaction. In other words, the molecules slow down
and collide less often.
Find real life examples which demonstrate one or more of the factors that
affect rates of reaction.
