Assignment 20

Behavior Intervention Plan for Marshall

Behavioral Definitions:
The target behavior is inappropriate language, which is defined as using curse
words either directly or indirectly towards staff and peers and not using manners.
The replacement behavior is school-appropriate language, which is defined as
using words and phrases that are appropriate for a school setting such as using manners
and not using words that are offensive to others such as curse words and profanity.

Baseline Data:
During the initial observation periods of 60 minutes each, Marshall used
inappropriate language during about 60% of the observed intervals.

Function of the Behavior:

The function of Marshall’s inappropriate language was to engage with and gain
attention from his teachers and peers (positive reinforcement-attention).

Behavioral Objective:
When the teachers and staff rotate through a check in/check out process, Marshall
will use appropriate language at least 90% of the time over the next month.

Intervention Procedures:
The teachers and staff will implement a check in/check out process that Marshall
will participate in every school day. The teachers and staff will create a schedule that they
will use to decide who will be in charge of checking Marshall out at the end of each class
period. Instead of reminding Marshall to use appropriate language and/or making a big
scene about it, everyone will do their best to ignore the behavior.
A test of the function-based intervention revealed that Marshall was using
inappropriate language an average of 60% of the time with no interventions in place.
However, when the interventions were implemented, Marshall had decreased his
inappropriate language use to about 10%. This significant change in Marshall’s
inappropriate language use shows that the function-based intervention was effective.

Data to be Collected:
Additional data will be collected using time-sampling observation sessions of 60
minutes each with 5-minute intervals.

Program Review Date:

The Behavior Intervention Plan will be reviewed on January 8th, 2018 after the
students return to school from winter break.

Personnel and Roles:

Marshall’s parents will be responsible for overlooking and signing Marshall’s
score report each day containing the results from his check in/check out system. D.A. one
of the co-teachers in the special education classroom will be responsible for collecting
data each day. M.L., the head teacher in the special education classroom, will be in
charge of conducting the check in with Marshall at the beginning of each day. All three
teachers and 5 paraprofessionals will be in charge of rotating through a schedule and
participating in the check out process at the end of each class period with Marshall. Also,
the teachers, staff members, and Marshall’s peers will be responsible for participating in
Marshall’s positive reinforcement, which is engaging in an activity with Marshall of his
choice if he earns 10/12 points on his score report each day.

Emergency Procedures:
If Marshall were to become disruptive and use inappropriate language excessively
even with the intervention in place, he will be sent to a secluded area of the classroom so
as to not disrupt and aggravate his peers and will be accompanied by an aide to ensure
that he is still receiving the attention that he needs to be successful. Marshall will be
allowed to return to the regular classroom once his inappropriate language use has
decreased and subsided.
