Pressure Vessel :

 A pressure vessel is a closed container designed to

hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially
different from the gauge pressure.

 Pressure Vessels are containers for the containment

of pressure either external or internal. The pressure
may be obtained from an external source, or by the
application of heat from a direct or indirect source,
or any combination thereof.”

 They are used in a variety of industries like:-

a. Petroleum Refining

b. Chemical

c. Power

d. Food & beverage

e. Pharmaceutical

3
Main Components Of Pressure Vessel :

Following are the main components of pressure

Vessels in general :-

a. Shell

b. Head

c. Nozzle

d. Support

4
Support :

 Support is used to bear all the load of pressure

vessel, earthquake and wind loads.

 There are different types of supports which are used

depending upon the size and orientation of the
pressure vessel.

It is considered to be the non-pressurized part of the

vessel.

Following are the various types:-

a. Saddle support

b. Leg Support

c. Lug support

d. Skirt support

e. Bracket support

5
Skirt support :

 One of the most common methods of supporting

vertical pressure vessels is by means of a rolled
cylindrical or conical shell called a skirt.

 The skirt can be either lap-, fillet-, or butt-welded

directly to the vessel.

 This method of support is attractive from the

designer’s standpoint because it minimizes the local
stresses at the point of attachment, and the direct
load is uniformly distributed over the entire
circumference.

 The use of conical skirts is more expensive from a

fabrication standpoint, and unnecessary for most
design situations.

 Tall vertical cylindrical pressure vessels are

typically supported by skirts. A skirt support
consists of a cylindrical or conical shell welded to
the base of the vessel.

6
 A support skirt is a cylindrical shell section that is
welded either to the lower portion of the vessel shell
or to the bottom head (for cylindrical vessels).

 The skirt is normally long enough to provide enough

flexibility so that radial thermal expansion of the
shell does not cause high thermal stresses at its
junction with the skirt.

7
Openings must be provided in the skirt for access
and for any connecting pipes; the openings are
normally reinforced. The skirt may be welded to the
bottom head of the vessel.

Derivation :

10
Skirt Support Thickness :

The most common governing conditions for determining

the thickness of the skirt are as follows:

1. Weight + overturning moment

2. Imposed loads from anchor chairs

3. Vessel erection

11
Skirt Support Height :

 Vertical pressure vessels may also be supported

by lugs.
 The use of lugs is restricted to pressure vessels
of small to medium diameter (1 to 10 ft).
 Also moderate height to diameter ratios in the
range of 2:1 to 5:1.
