2. Puntos(2+3=5) The van der Waals equation of state, an approximate representation
2
of the behavior of gases at high pressure, is given by (p + a Vn 2 )(V − nb) = nRT , where
a and b are non-zero constants. Find the dimension of [a] and [b] in the dimension of
[P],[V] and [n].
3. Puntos(2+3+5=10) Three gas molecules chosen at random are found to have speeds
of 100, 200, and 400 m/s. What is the average speed (vav )? What is the r.m.s speed
(vrms )? Why vrms > vav ?

4. Puntos(20+10+5=35) The PV-diagram of one cycle of n-mole ideal-gas Carnot engine
is shown in this diagram. Using dS = dQ/T and dQ = dU +dW , where Q, U and W repre-

5. Puntos(2.5+2.5+5=10) Given that the electric field at the center of the Cartesian
co-ordinates, say at P with co-ordinate (0,0), due to a positive point charge +q located
at position (x,y) is exactly equal in magnitude and direction due to a negative point
charge -q located at position (-x,-y). Using this statement, draw the equivalent diagram
of rectangular (shown in left figure) charge configuration (a) only with positive charges and
(b) only with negative charges. (c) Using this same statement, prove diagrammatically
(no need calculational details) that the Electric-field at the center of the circular ring
(shown in right figure) with charge +Q is zero.

6. Puntos(15+10=25) Find the electric-field at point P, due to the electric-dipole shown
in this diagram. Find the approximate expression of the Electric fields at very large dis-
tances, such that a/x << 1. [Use binomial expansion, (1 + r)n = 1 + nr + n(n−1)
