Urbanisation the hemplagne that has infected mankind.

It lend to the
construction of jar dropping marvels such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the
mega polis of Tokyo but it has blinded us from the consequences which is
environmental destruction. As quoted by Stephen Hawking, “man has forgotten
mother nature”. Every year nearly 200,00 acres of forest are cleared in order to
make many for construction of buildings and motorways. In India and the size
of Kelantan is cleared for the new urbanisation project, ‘city of comfort’. Is this
the fate of mankind? Greed and the urge to have a better life has blinded us
from seeing the bigger picture which is the downfall of our species due to our
ignoraree.

The effects of urbanisation are slow but deadly. Once a city is built, it
attracts people from all walks of life. That is not all that it attracts. Motorised
vehicles fill in the city, factories start the production and open burning
becomes the alternative to manage wastes. All of these harm the environment
tremendously by emitting harmful greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide,
methane and nitrogen dioxide. These gasses accumulate in the earth’s
atmosphere and provoke the greenhouse effects. The temperature of the earth
rises steadily causing massive heat wave strikes and melting of the polar ice.
Every year nearly 2 kilometres of ice get melted away and in the last 30 years,
ice the size of Manhattan has been liquefied, thanks to mankind. If this
continues ocean levels will rise and men have to face giant floods in the hear
future. Besides that, the greenhouses gases contribute to the thinning of
Earth’s shield from the dangerous rays of the sun which is the Ozone layer. The
weak ozone layer causes harmful rays such as gamma rays and x-rays to
peretrate into the earths atmosphere from space. This in return speeds up
global warming. Besides the earths ozone layer also creates one of the most
spectacular light shows on earth which is the Aurora Borealis. It is prodneed by
the refraction of the sun’s harmful rays. If the ozone layer continues to become
thinner the future generation might just have to see the Aurora in books and
on the internet, considering that mankind survives the hot future.

Besides than that, urbanisation causes the destruction of countless

trees.Tree play a vital role in making sure the environment and eco-system
remains stable. Trees filter carbon dioxide which is the most abundant
greenhouse gas in our atmosphere and produce oxygen. If we remove these
helpful trees, carbon dioxide has no way to be reduced. Besides trees provide
structural support to the soil in hill areas and the lack of trees causes massive
landslides that neap carbaige worth millions and also lead to innocent lives
being killed. Trees also provide a healthy habitat to numerous wildlife. The
destruction of trees spell the extinction of these animals solve. Of which are
already endangered. The future generation might not even know the meaning
of tiger or pangolin anymore.

Urbanisation also causes the changes of weather patterns. People now

days are busy complaining that the weather is unpredictable and it spoils their
plans to go for vacation or shopping but they are unaware that they are
contributing to it. Urban areas commonly have a large landfill to manage solid
waste in the area. These landfills are filled with rubbish which produce methare
gas as they decompose. This gas is lighter than air thus rises to the
atmosphere. An accumulation of this deadly gas causes the air pressure in a
specific area to lessen thus clouds and surrounding air which are denser rush
in to fill the void and cheating unpredictable weather such as freak storms and
hale. This in return affects the life of the people who contributed to its
creation. The cycle continues and mankind still wants to live with it.

Lastly, urbanisation causes pollution to the water and land. The

population in an urban city is normally around thousands or even tens of
thousands. There are certainly a few of them who are willing to go the extra
mile to harm the environment. Reckless people throw their waste into the river
nearby or burry harmful discarded materials such as batteries in the soil due to
the reason that they are too busy with their hectic lifestyle. The waste thrown
into the river pollutes the water and harms the fish meanwhile the batteries
buried pollute the soil up to a 3km radins thus making it infextilo .

In conclusion, urbanisation causes destruction to the environment

eventhough it brings comfort to our lives. It is impossible for man to stop
urbanisation as it has become a crucial element in our plush lifestyle. Therefore
it should be done with consideration for the environment. By doing it in eco-
friendly may such as planting trees in the city, car pooling, rooftop garden
construction and the usage of electric cars. We can reduce the effects of
urbanisation have came up with these solutions, they are still in their infant
stage. I hope such solutions can be more practically applied in the future in
order to make this world a healthy and a happy place to live in..
