MU-AEST Lesson Plan Template

Course Title: Engineering Drawing

Teacher’s Name: Ms. Sweeney
Grade Level: High School (9-12)
Lesson Title: Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance
Lesson Length: 80 minutes

STAGE 1: Identify Desired Results

Primary Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Science, Technology & Engineering

Education:
This lesson contributes to students’ attainment of the following standard(s):

Standard - 3.4.10.C2
Analyze a prototype and/or create a working model to test a design concept by making actual
observations and necessary adjustments.
Standard - 3.4.3.E6
Explain how manufacturing systems design and produce products in quantity.

Other Pennsylvania Core Academic Standards (reading, math, history, etc.):

This lesson contributes to students’ attainment of the following standards in other
academic areas:

Standard - CC.2.1.HS.F.5
Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.
Standard - CC.2.3.HS.A.3
Verify and apply geometric theorems as they relate to geometric figures.
Standard - CC.2.3.HS.A.14
Apply geometric concepts to model and solve real world problems.

Behavioral (Performance) Objectives:

A. At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to use a micrometer and a digital
caliper to take measurements with 90% accuracy.

B. At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to apply the concept of geometric
dimensioning and tolerance when 3D modeling their LEGO with 100% accuracy.

C. During the lesson, students will actively measure and discuss answers of measurement
data while documenting their data using a measurement sheet with 100% completion.

Essential Questions:

1. Why do manufacturers use Geometric Dimensioning and tolerance?

2. What is a tolerance and what are the two main types?

3. Where do we see GD&T on drawings?

4. How do you read a micrometer?

Content Outline:

I. Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance

a. Standard system to control features on a drawing
b. Gives precision to economical and interchangeable parts
c. Parts are manufactured in different locations and GD&T provides a universal
language for standardizing dimensioning

II. Tolerance: An allowable variance from the original dimension (Max & Min Limits)
a. Two main types of tolerances:
i. Form: machined part can vary in shape and size
ii. Position: machined part can vary in location

III. GD&T Symbols

a. Feature Control frames: Contains the series of symbols identifying the
geometric tolerance
b. Datum: An exact point, axis, plane, or surface from which features of a part are
located
c. Geometric Tolerances originate from the Datum

IV. How to read a micrometer

a. Focus on the barrel and thimble for taking dimensions once the part is between
the measuring faces
b. Add together: highest number on the barrel, marks past the whole number on
the barrel, and the number of marks on the thimble given their precision and
numerical value)

STAGE 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence

Students will be assessed on the learned content of reading a micrometer by completing a

measurement sheet while they are measuring pre-existing LEGO’s. Students will also
participate in the lesson by answering probing questions about the content they are learning
which must be applied when completing their 3D models for the LEGO Replica design
challenge.

STAGE 3: Plan Learning Experiences & Instruction

Procedures:
START: (All computer materials such as the PowerPoint will be set up on the projector, design briefs with
measurement sheets are printed and ready, micrometers and helpful visuals are set up in the back)

o Teacher will pass out the design briefs and begin to introduce geometric dimensioning &
tolerances. The teacher will ask probing questions and application questions to the
students while the presentation is being given.
o Example math questions will be given to the students to solve during the presentation.
This will help the students once they are ready for the measurement sheet.
o The design brief will be reviewed and the measurement sheet is introduced.
o The students will go to the back and get into groups of four per one micrometer. They will
use their measurement sheets to take all necessary dimensions from the LEGOs
provided.
o As a class, the measurements taken will be checked and discussed.
o Once the class has all the necessary dimensions, students will return to their computers
and start on Autodesk Inventor to start their LEGO 3D model. They will use the
measurements they took in the back with the micrometer when creating the 3D model.

Instructional Aids or Resources:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Projector
 PowerPoint Presentation
 Essential question sheet
 10 4X2 LEGOs
 Micrometers (Qty. 6)
 Digital caliper (Qty. 1)
 Design brief with measurement sheet (Qty. 25)
 Computers with Autodesk Inventor

Differentiating Instruction: This lesson incorporates many different strategies that can
engage all learners during instruction and attempt to meet individual needs. Strategies include:

1. Reiteration on knowledge learned after to today’s lesson

2. Walking around to make sure all students are engaged and comprehending the activity

3. Asking the class for answers and probing them for more detail when needed

4. Use of media to further content in the presentation

5. Use of a visual aid on the measurement sheets for easier data taking
