EXPERIMENT No: 3

TITLE:
‘To Determine the Absolute And Kinematic Viscosity Of The Given Fluid Sample’

INTRODUCTION:
The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to gradual deformation by shear stress or tensile
stress. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of "thickness"; for example, honey has a much
higher viscosity than water. Kinematic viscosity is traditionally measured by noting the time it takes oil to
travel through the orifice of a capillary under the force of gravity. Absolute viscosity is measured as the
resistance to flow when an external and controlled force (pump, pressurized air, etc.)

OBJECTIVE:
Viscosity describes a fluids internal resistance to flow and may be through of as measure of fluids
friction.

PROCEDURE:

 First took the U-Tube Viscometer apparatus.

 Then put liquid in Viscometer, the value of which is to be measure.
 Now apply sucking force with the help of sucker.
 Note the time required for the test liquid to flow through a capillary of a known diameter
between two marked points, using stop watch.
 Put the liquids ,Mustard oil, Amla Oil and Motor Oil
 Proceed with the steps write above and repeat these steps three times consecutively.
 Now put values in formula to find Viscosity.

RECORTED DATA:

Fluid tf(sec)
Mustard Oil 240
Motor oil 488
Amla Oil 243
DATA ANALYSIS:

Fluid tf(sec) tw(sec) ρf(Kg/m3) µf(N.sec/m2) Remarks

Mustard Oil 240 4 830 0.0499
Motor oil 488 4 740 0.0905
Amla Oil 243 4 780 0.0475

DISSCUSSION:

 In Fluid column write a names of oil used.

 In 2nd column write a values of fluid time recorded during experiment.
 In 3rd column write a value of time of water required to move from upper to lower marked point.
 Calculated the value of Density by using formula ρ=m/v by dividing mass and volume.
 Calculated the Viscosity of fluid by multiply density and time of fluid, divided, by product of
density of water and its time and over all multiply it by Viscosity of water.

CONCLUSION:

 The results shows that Motor oil has greatest viscosity among all as it requires more time to
move and has lowest value of density .
 On the other hand Amla oil has lowest value of viscosity among all as it requires lesser time to
move.
