The Jazz Cruise is steeped in the tradition of “straight ahead”

jazz. To honor that commitment, each future sailing will select
The Jazz Cruise Fantasy Band for that year and we will strive
to honor them during the week in song and word.
The Jazz Cruise Fantasy Band for 2017
includes Sarah Vaughan, Oscar Peterson,
Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, Ray Brown
and Gene Krupa. Not a bad start.
THE LEGENDS The Jazz Cruise has great respect for the musicians who paved
the way for future generations and who remain vibrant members of the jazz community.
Legends such as Houston Person and Freddy Cole have graced the cruise for years and
need no introduction. 14 time GRAMMY® winner and NEA Jazz Master alto saxophonist,
clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera sailed on TJC ’16 for the first time.
He is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical
composer. Also an NEA Jazz Master, drummer Jimmy Cobb will forever be remembered
as the drummer on Miles Davis’ seminal album, Kind of Blue. GRAMMY® winner
clarinetist Eddie Daniels clearly fits the legendary category having performed for over
five decades. Drummer Lewis Nash is another GRAMMY® winner and can boast,
perhaps, the largest discography in the world of jazz. And, after years of discussions,
The Jazz Cruise is proud to present 7 time GRAMMY® winner Al Jarreau, clearly
one of the most beloved and recognized vocalists in the world of jazz for decades.
His appearance on the cruise will be very special indeed. The Jazz Cruise salutes
its 2017 class of jazz legends.

THE VOICES The Jazz Cruise has a rich tradition of presenting the finest jazz vocalists.
We strive to offer as many different voices and styles as possible year after year. We are
deeply honored to have Eliane Elias, not only for the first time on The Jazz Cruise, but sailing
for the first time ever as a performer. Born in Brazil, she is an internationally renowned
pianist and vocalist and will certainly rock the boat. Winner of 10 GRAMMY Awards®,
Take 6 is the preeminent a cappella group in the gospel and jazz world. Besides their
sizzling jazz sets, they will be performing with Wycliffe Gordon in our Gospel Hour.
Cyrille Aimée is returning to the cruise and our fans cannot wait to enjoy her beautiful
voice and magical presence. When it comes to hot and sassy, no current jazz vocalist
does it better than René Marie, who will be sailing on The Jazz Cruise for the first
time. Also, new to the cruise is Clint Holmes, a fabulous singer who will handle the
American Songbook with style. Finally, there is Niki Haris who has sailed with us for
years in various roles, but this year is her turn to star.

THE GROUPS The richness of those tight and dynamic groups that shine on The Jazz
Cruise is difficult to beat. Never has that been truer than the presence, for the first time, of
Superband, an amazing pairing of Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Bill Evans, Tom Kennedy
and Dennis Chambers. Randy has talked about doing this for the cruise for years now and it
has finally come to fruition. Four of our other groups are longstanding stalwarts of the cruise,
Marcus Miller, John Pizzarelli Quartet, Jeff Hamilton Trio and Clayton Brothers Quintet.
Besides leading their respective groups, Marcus will continue to be our interviewer
of choice and John will reprise his role of being the host of The Jazz Cruise
Hall of Fame Show. Returning to the cruise after a couple of years away is the
Benny Green Trio. Benny is truly one of the great talents in the genre. To provide a new
twist, Grégoire Maret, clearly the most exciting jazz harmonica player today, will anchor his
fabulous trio. Each group will offer up their own special flavor to this amazing event.

ALL STARS/BIG BAND In the great tradition of The Jazz Cruise, the ’17 lineup
features an array of musicians, leaders in their own right, who comprise our various All
Star groupings and our Big Band. The leader of this group, and the Music Director for
all performances is multi-GRAMMY® nominee Shelly Berg. When not performing at the
piano, Shelly is busy arranging and scheduling all of the shows on The Jazz Cruise. His
creativity and skill have ushered in a new era of programming and excitement.
Piano – Other piano players in the group include cruise veterans
Bill Cunliffe and Allen Farnham, all of whom sport impeccable
resumes and countless career highlights. Back again on the
Hammond B3 organ is cruise favorite Joey DeFrancesco, who
will perform in various special sets.

Reeds – The All Stars comprising the Reeds section are all
veterans of The Jazz Cruise and each a leader of his own group
from time to time. Jimmy Greene, fresh off a GRAMMY®
nomination returns to the cruise, while Eric Marienthal,
Dick Oatts and Bob Sheppard reprise recent roles.
Gary Smulyan, the ultimate baritone saxophonist,
will again be the focal point of a late night jam and
clarinetist/raconteur Ken Peplowski will continue to be
the host and producer of the Welcome Show.
Drums – The heart and soul of any jazz band is the
person at the drums and The Jazz Cruise is no different.
Besides an amazing trio of drummers leading groups
(Jimmy Cobb, Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton),
The Jazz Cruise can boast four super drummers
for the All Stars/Big Band. Cruise veterans include Ernie Adams,
Joe LaBarbera and Dennis Mackrel and John Riley returns for his
second sailing.
Horns – Trombonist John Fedchock is the Big Band Director and
has selected John Allred, Robin Eubanks, Tony Kadleck, Jennifer
Wharton and Liesl Whitaker to join him on the band stand, as
well as perform in the various All Star Groups. Back as well is
James Morrison, one of Australia’s greatest gifts to the world of
jazz, and, of course, Wycliffe Gordon, the host of The Gospel
Show and one of the most dynamic performers on the cruise.
Basses – Rounding out the rhythm sections are a trio of top
bassists, Jay Anderson, Chuck Bergeron and David Finck.
