PROCEDURE Engineering 05

Issue
1. General

1.1. Scope

This specification covers the general requirements for tightening of heat exchanger stud bolt
and pressure vessel.

1.2. Reference

Vessel shall be complied with the requirements of the following codes, standards and Purchaser
requirements.

TEMA (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturer Association)

ASME section VIII division 1, 2001 edition and 2002 addenda

2. Application of Tightening

2.1. Make sure the flanges are clean and free of any serious defects.

2.2. Place the gasket on flange surface to be sealed, bringing the opposing flange into contact with
the gasket.

2.3. Center the gasket on the flange, which important for raised face flange.

2.4. Clean bolts and lubricate them with graphite and oil mixture.

2.5. Place the stud bolt into bolt hole and finger tightens the nuts.

2.6. Tighten the bolts correctly to compress gasket uniformly

2.7. Use torque wrench and well-lubricated fasteners to ensure correct initial loading.

2.8. Do not tighten bolts more than 30% of recommended bolt stress during the initial tighten
sequence. This will cause cooking of flange and crushing of the gasket

2.9. Do not clockwise bolt to bolt torque checks upon reaching recommended torque requirements
to ensure bolts have been stressed. It is important to pre-stress the bolts to ensure continuance
of an adequate stress load in operating conditions.

3. Acceptance Criteria

3.1. Torque values conform to table attached.

3.2. No leakage in flange joint during pressure test.
