Curriculum Critique on

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Overview of the curriculum

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program is a four-year degree

program which focuses on the study of computer utilization and computer software to
plan, install, customize, operate, manage, administer and maintain information technology
infrastructure. It likewise deals with the design and development of computer-based
information systems for real-world business solutions. The goal of the program is to gear up
students as "information technologists" who can assist individuals and organizations in solving
problems using information technology (IT) techniques.

BS in Information Technology program equips students with the basic ability to

conceptualize, design and implement software applications. It also provides experience in the
development of office support (word processing, spreadsheet, database and accounting),
intranet and internet and specialized professional software (multi-media, website development
and ecommerce). It also offers background in mathematical and computing principles.

The teaching methods used are classroom discussions, practicum exercises spent in
computer laboratories and on the job trainings or internships.

Rationale

Many jobs in the IT (Information Technology) sector are considered professions,

because the skills and knowledge required to perform them are specific, complex and familiar
only to those who have a great deal of work experience.

However, graduating from BS in Information Technology does not make you a

professional; it is just an entry point to the IT industry. Only after you have a few years of
working experience and you specialize in a specific field of IT (for example: PHP Web
development, Oracle Database or Java), will you be regarded as a professional.

The BSIT program consists of 45 credit hours (15 courses) of junior/senior-level IT

courses including information security, web systems, computer networking and software
engineering. In addition, students will complete supporting coursework in business, technical
writing, statistics, arts and humanities, and culture and diversity.

Here are some courses that actually included in the curriculum in BSIT:

Programming 1 (C Language)- 3 Hours ITE COR 2

VB.Net - 3 Hours PROG 4

Accounting Principles - 3 Hours ITE PRO 2

Operating System Application- 3 Hours IT 340

Information Assurance & Security- 3 Hours ITE ELE 3

Software Engineering- 3 Hours ITE PRO 9

System Integration and Architecture - 3 Hours IT 416

Operating Systems Application- 3 Hours ITE PRO 5

Computer Networks - 3 Hours IT 422

Free Elective 2 - 3 Hours ITE FRE 2

Free Elective 3 - 3 Hours ITE FRE 3

Introduction to IT Research- 3 Hours REASERCH

Capstone Project- 3 Hours ITE PRO 11

Management Information System- 3 Hours ITE ELE 4

The program prepares students to become IT professionals with primary competencies

in the areas of systems analysis and design, applications development, database administration,
network administration, and systems implementation and maintenance. This curriculum is
important because the students will have the chance to apply the skills, knowledge and attitude
learned in the school and at the same time the opportunity to experience the corporate
environment. Internship is a requirement for the BS Information Technology program with a
minimum of 486 internship hours. The program also requires a Capstone project. It should be in
the form of an IT applications development as a business solution for an industry need.
BSIT is a relatively difficult course. It requires a lot of abstract thinking, logical and
critical thinking which are not innate for most people.

There are no specific requirements for this course. As long as the student is a high
school graduate, able to submit the necessary credentials/documents, and passes the college
entrance examination and interview, he/she will be admitted in the BSIT program. Information
Technology is so fascinating. It can be very addictive sometimes having to apply creative input
and logic.

Conclusions

Therefore I conclude that the curriculum includes courses that will facilitate the
development of the students in the different disciplines of Information Technology. Hence,
basic courses in the curriculum help the student to become knowledgeable in the different
academic areas that will mold them to become a better student, professional, citizen and as a
person. All of these combined will result in the attainment of the vision and mission of the
university as well as the goals of the IT and Computer Education unit. Quality graduates will
result to employability and with all the tools they learned in the university/schools.

Recommendation

I highly recommend this course to all technology lovers. If you're into technology (you like
the latest trend in the technology industry, you like to do stuffs in the computer, you're computer
geek, etc.) then go for this course. As I mentioned earlier, if you're like analyzing things and solving
complex problems, this course is good for you. If not, there are other things that may interest you
likewise, multimedia and computer network.
There are lots of employment opportunities for a BSIT graduate. You can be an Application
Developer, Data Analyst, System Analyst, Network Administrator, Database Administrator, System
Engineer, Test Engineer, Software Engineer, etc.
Technology is growing every year and so the demand for the computer-related course
graduates is increasing. There are lots of job opportunities and you only have to choose. Of course,
you have to do your best to be accepted in the job that you want.
