TEKS
111.4 Mathematics, Grade 2, Adopted 2012

(b) Knowledge and Skills

(2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards
to understand how to represent and compare whole numbers, the relative
position and magnitude of whole numbers, and relationship within the
numeration system related to place value. The student is expected to:

(B) use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1200
Technology Standards
ISTE/NETS for Teachers:

2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments

d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative

assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting
data to inform learning and teaching
Technology Standard Cont.
ISTE/NETS for Students:

4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making

c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
Class Activity
Objective: The teacher will explain the different values of numbers as well as the
different ways of writing numbers. Students will then attempt to solve problems
by writing numbers in standard, word or expanded form.

Description of Activity: students attempt to answer problems and explore the

different questions and answers that they can encounter in assessments,
Standard Form
A way of writing down extremely big numbers or extremely small numbers
easier.

Example:

21

113

1154
Word Form
When using word form we must simplify numerical numbers and express them
with words

Ex.

2 Two

21 Twenty-one

113 One hundred and thirteen

1154 One thousand one hundred fifty-four

Expanded Form
This is another way of showing a number is equal to the sum of each number’s
value. By expanding the number each digit is shown in its correct place value.

Example:

2 0+2= 2

21 20+1= 21

113 100+10+3= 113

1154 1000+100+50+4= 1154

Place Value
The numerical value that a number has depending on its position

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

2 1
