2018 Utah State Chess Tournament

Friday and Saturday, March 23/24, 2018

Cost 15$ if Prepaying, 25$ at the door.
Championship Section
This is the higher level of the two sections, and will allow you to play against some of
the best high school chess players in the state. The time conditions are G/75 d/5 (This
means each player has 75 minutes, and the clock is set to a 5 second delay). This
tournament is 5 rounds swiss and starts on friday from 4:00-7:00 P.M. the tournament
continues on Saturday from 8:30-2:00. We are very lucky this year, as the tournament is
actually taking place only 8 minutes from AMES, meaning that no time will have to be
taken off school to attend. The winner of this tournament, may go on to represent Utah
on a national level.
Junior Varsity Section
This section provides less experienced players a great chance to learn and practice
tournament skills, it also has much shorter games, and still has awards for the winners.
This tournament only lasts one day, Saturday from 8:30-2:00. The time conditions for
this are G/30 d/5 (this means each player has 30 minutes, with a 5 second delay). This
tournament has 6 rounds, and will generally be a little more relaxed, while still providing
difficult opponents.
Additional Information
Because of the nearness to the tournament, the AMES chess team hopes to host a
practice session after school, where newer players can learn about tournament play,
and tournament conventions, like taking notation and time restraints. Along with this,
