ABSTRACT
Basketball is a high energy demand sport, requiring a properskeletal muscle cell metabolic capacity. This allows the
athletes to respond appropriately to the game request. In the present study, 10 young females, university students
basketball players (age: 21 years old, weight: 62,7±5 kg, VO2max: 37,1±5 ml/kg/min) were submitted to a high intensity
interval training protocol, 3 times a week during 6 weeks. The following variables were assessed before and after the
intervention;body weight (kg), VO2max (ml/kg/min), fat mass (kg), anaerobic threshold (%VO2max). After theexercise
intervention VO2max increased 11% (4±3 ml/kg/min), anaerobic threshold raised 8% (pre = 60% VO2max, post = 68%
VO2 max) and fat mass decreased 3,1kg. In conclusion, high intensity interval training is an efficient method to be
incorporated to a young basketball players training program.
