The Roman Empire

The Roman Empire rose to power after the assassination of Julius Caesar and it lasted

until 476 A.D. Ancient Rome had an economy largely based on agrarianism. They focused on

farming in order to feed the great number of citizens in the Mediterranean region. Farmers’ main

products included grains, olives, and grapes; these were also the main exports of the empire.

Products other than food did not lead in their exports, but they received many different silks,

cotton, and spices from areas in Asia. Rome had a basic banking system with money that could

be exchanged for goods and services, although there was no central banking system with

regulations.

We believe that Rome was the greatest economic and military power of its time. It’s military

was superior, using well-thought tactics to defeat some of the best military’s of the time,

including Carthage and Persia. Their society was very well organized and thought out. They

were one of the first republics. Their capital city, Rome, was architecturally superior, and there

were public baths and fountains served by the aqueducts. These marvels of engineering used

gravity and physics to transport water over long distances (over 50 miles) to the city and its

suburbs. They had superior road- building techniques. They built these roads quickly to move

armies at a greater speed then their enemies, and they have stood the test of time. They last 200
times longer then modern roads! But most importantly, they are just really cool and a

powerhouse.
