Thought for the week

The advice to St Paul to Timothy is that we should pray for those in authority; sound advice for those this weekend as we
welcome Pope Benedict XVI to our shores. In fact by the time you read this his visit will be half over! We pray not only
for Benedict the person, but for all that the Bishop of Rome stand for. As successor of Peter, the Pope represents the centre
of unity for the Universal Church. His authority is as Vicar of Christ but it is exercised as a service for us all. The visit of
the Holy Father to this country is the opportunity par excellence for us to express our communion with him and the entire
Catholic Church. We can do this whether or not we can be physically present at any of the Papal events, in fact we do it
every time we come to mass. The visit of Pope Benedict reminds us very powerfully that we are not alone in our faith and
we are involved in something which is bigger than the sum total of its parts. When the dust settles after the visit (and the
bills have been paid!) let’s hope that we all emerge with our faith strengthened and affirmed.

What is a Mass intention?

According to an old tradition, Catholics may offer a contribution to a priest and request an intention for a particular Mass
(see the Code of Canon Law 945–946). This custom invites the faithful into a deeper celebration of the Eucharist by unit-
ing their sacrifice with that of Christ. It also contributes to the material support of the priest. Because of this latter reason,
the contribution is called a “stipend.” In many countries, particularly on the missions, these Mass stipends, sent from
abroad, are a major source of financial support for the local Church.

Most parishes (including this one) keep a record of Mass intentions in the office or sacristy and they are commonly pub-
lished in the bulletin and announced at the Masses. When doing so, it is more accurate to say, “We remember this person
in a special way at this Mass,” than to say in a restrictive sense, “This Mass is offered for this person.” The Mass is offered
for all the living and all the dead - and the intention of the donor is being remembered too: there is room for all in
the "Mass intention", and priests are always happy to pray for whoever requests it, though they may only accept one sti-
pend per day.

An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of an-
other person, or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The tradition of offering Masses
for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. St. Augustine (d. 430) recorded the dying wishes of
his mother, St. Monica in his Confessions: "One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wher-
ever you may be."
