Rider University Starbucks Observation

Sarah, Erin, Joanna, Kory, Mercedes

A. When is the Starbucks most busy on Rider University's campus

B. The morning time on Monday will bring more people to Starbucks then the morning and
afternoon times of Tuesday and Wednesday because students need the morning time on
Monday to wake up.
C. Our independent variable will be the time of days we will all go during Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday. Our dependent variable will be the amount of people going into the line
at Starbucks.
D. Each person in our group will go inside of Starbucks, sit at a table and pretend to be
doing homework or studying. The person will sit at the table for 20 minutes and mark
down each person that walks into the line. The table below shows the times that everyone
can do the research. We will be considering the morning as any time before 12:00 pm
lunch time. The afternoon will be considered as anytime between 12:00pm to 5:00pm.
Evening is considered any time after 5:00pm.

F. I feel that our hypothesis was not supported because there were many more people who
went to Starbucks on Tuesday and Wednesday rather than Monday. The results show this
in the chart that is provided. The answer to our research question is that more people
come on Tuesdays and Wednesdays rather than Mondays.
G. Some limitations found using this method to answer our hypothesis was that we were not
able to interact with the students who walked up to the Starbucks line. Some students
could have been influenced by a friend to get something at Starbucks during a certain
time, which could have made the data not as accurate. As the researchers we were not
able to ask if it was the students decision to get Starbucks that day at the times we
collected data.
H. Our observations were pretty simple. We were able to easily count the number of
students in the Starbucks line and keep a tally. Other thoughts about this observation
were that because we observed at various times and days we were able to see a realistic
view of a popular location on campus. We did not face any major problems doing this
observation. Something that we could do differently would be maybe changing where we
sat, within our observation to see a different perspective of the line, as well as going at
different times or even a different set of times. Overall, this observation was simple and
effective.
I. During the research process each member took 20 min out of their day for three days to
observe and take tallys of how many people walked into the starbucks line. The times
were from Monday through Wednesday (mornings and afternoons) and took place after
class and during class. And after four people did a question for the final write up; while
one was in charge of review and submission of the assignment.
