READ 3226 Reflection

I created this lesson knowing that I wanted students to practice making inferences. I
wanted students to write accurate inferences based off quotes from the text. I planned to start the
lesson by reading aloud a chapter from Bud, Not Buddy. I knew that I needed to supply students
with a definition for making inferences in order for them to have an understanding of what they
would be doing during the lesson. After the read aloud I modeled to the students how I went
through a small text in order to make inferences and pull out details from the text. I did this same
modeling for the guided practice but this time had the students help with making the inferences
and pulling out the details from the text. For the independent practice I wanted students to
practice making inferences based on Bud, Not Buddy. In order to do this, I wanted students to
analyze and make inferences from “Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life
and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself”. I planned for students to fill out a google form that
required students to write the rule, make inferences based on the rule they chose, and cite
evidence from the rule.
I taught the following lesson for block 1 and 2. After teaching block 1, I was able to see
what had worked and what didn’t work during the lesson. While walking around and monitoring
the classroom during the independent practice I was able to see that students struggled with the
last question on the independent practice, “Cite evidence from rule”. I was able to quickly
reword this question in a way that related back to the guided practice. I told students that for this
question it would be like how we were underlining pieces from the text to support our inferences.
After telling students this they were able to better understand the question and produce and
answer. During the second block, before I sent the students off to complete the independent
practice I made sure that I clarified what I was asking in the last question, “Cite evidence from
the rule”. This helped students to be successful in understanding what the question was asking
and how to correctly respond. If I were to teach this lesson again I would also take more time to
talk about the definition of making inferences and creating one that is kid friendly.
