ISSUES BRIEF ‘TUESDAY, 27 MARCH 2018 TURNBULL & HIS CONSERVATIVES + Tumbull is elitist and arrogant and his Conservatives are inept and out of touch — he is only for the top end of town, choosing to give a tax handout to millionaires and multinationals, while making everyone else pay more. LABOR & BILL SHORTEN * Bill and Labor are fighting for a fair go for all Australians — we'll protect penalty rates and local jobs, protect Medicare and schools, keep taxes lower for ordinary people, and build a strong economy that delivers for all. LABOR’S PLAN TO CRACK DOWN ON TAX LOOPHOLES, PROTECT PENSIONERS, AND PAY FOR SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS ‘+ Labor's reforms to excess dividend imputation credits will crack down on an $8 billion a year unsustainable tax loophole that gives tax refunds to people who don't pay income tax, while protecting pensioners and paying for better schools and hospitals. ‘+ Labor's new Pensioner Guarantee will protect pensioners from changes to excess dividend imputation credits. + The Pensioner Guarantee will protect pensioners who may otherwise be affected by this important reform. ‘+ Labor is cracking down on this tax loophole because it will soon cost the budget $8 billion a year. + Much of this goes to high-wealth individuals, with 80 per cent of the benefit accruing to the wealthiest 20 per cent of retirees. The top one per cent of self- managed superannuation funds received an average cash refund of more than $80,000 in 2014-15. * Labor does not think itis fair to spend $8 billion a year on a tax loophole that ‘mainly benefits millionaires who don't pay income tax — not when school standards are falling and hospital waiting lists are growing longer. * Turnbull has been the worst prime minister for Australia’s pensioners in living memory. Tumbull has: © cut the pension for 277,000 retirees; © kicked another 92,300 retirees off the pension altogether; © cut pension concessions that help pensioners with costs including rates and registration; and © Is trying to cut the $365-a-year energy supplement for 400,000 pensioners, © Promised to raise the retirement age to 70 ~ the highest in the world CRICKET BALL-TAMPERING SCANDAL ‘+ Like all Australian sports fans, | was very disappointed to hear the news from South Africa, ‘+ Australians expect sportspeople to represent our country with integrity and in the spirit of fair play, and to set a good example. ‘+ Lunderstand Steven Smith and David Warner have agreed to step down as captain and vice-captain for the rest of this Test match and Cricket Australia has ‘made it clear itis taking the matter seriously and will conduct an investigation. * Cheating is unacceptable and, for the sake of our international sporting reputation and Australians’ confidence in the integrity of sport, must not be tolerated. NEWSPOLL * You don't need a poll to know that Malcolm Turnbull is overseeing the most out of touch government in Australian history. + Tumbull and Abbott are the only people obsessed with Newspoll. By Turnbull's ‘own measure, he's only got one more to go before he stands down, ‘+ While the Liberal and Nationals are in Canberra consumed by internal squabbles and proxy leadership battles, Labor is talking about issues that matter to Australians, ‘+ We're focused on what actually matters to people ~ making the tax system fairer, lowering private health insurance premiums, tackling out of control power prices, properly funding our schools, protecting penalty rates and saving Medicare COMPANY TAX CUTS © Tumbull and the Liberals are giving a $65 tax handout to the top end of town while cutting money from schools and hospitals. ‘+ Tumbull is totally out of touch. He is looking after the top end of town while increasing taxes for seven milion working and middle class Australians. + Labor has different priorities - we want a fair go for all Australians, not just the top end of town * Instead of giving $65 billion to the top end of town, we'll deliver extra funding to ur schools, improve our hospitals and protect Medicare. Will you repeal? + We haven't given up fighting this unfair tax handout — it hasn't passed the parliament yet. * Our position is clear — multinational corporations and big banks should not be getting a $65 billion tax handout, Pauline Hanson's deal - * Pauline Hanson shouldn't sell-out Queenslanders by tearing up with Turnbull give a massive tax handout to multinational corporations and the big banks. * The Government has conned One Nation ~ there are 140,000 fewer apprentices under the Liberals, and they have bought One Nation off with an empty promise of replacing 0.7 per cent of the apprenticeships that have been lost under this government. DUTTON AU PAIR VISA + It's up to Peter Dutton to explain his use of ministerial discretion. ‘+ His explanation yesterday didn't explain anything, FAMILY VIOLENCE LEAVE ‘+ AShorten Labor Government will legislate for ten days paid domestic and family violence leave in the National Employment Standards (NES). ‘+ While Labor has been talking about a workplace response to domestic violence for years now, the liberals are only just now coming to the table and their response is not good enough. + Turnbull and his liberals do not support introducing paid domestic violence leave into the NES. They see domestic violence leave as a cost to business and, ina terrifying display of how out of touch they are, argue that it will make women less attractive to employers. + In fact in 2016, the Federal Government applied the bargaining policy to prevent public service enterprise agreements in approximately 30 departments (including the Prime Minister's) to specify the provision of paid family violence leave. + Labor understands the combined stress of seeking legal advice, access Counselling services and medical treatment should not be compounded by fear of losing your job or the financial disadvantage of going without pay. * Many employers already provide paid family violence leave, including Medicare, CUB, Telstra, NAB, Virgin Australia, IKEA and Qantas, ‘* Australia's unions have strongly advocated for paid domestic and family violence leave, ‘+ Labor understands that the complexity of family violence requires a strategic approach by all levels of government, business, and the community. CHILDCARE WAGES + Labor recognises that quality early education and care can only be provided by a skilled, professional and well paid workforce, * The early learning quality agenda Labor introduced means our early childhood educators are more qualified and skilled than ever. * tis not right that those who educate our youngest minds eam less than half the average national wage. * Ifthe Turnbull Government were serious about a fair wage for our early childhood educators, they would be sitting down and talking with them, + Instead the Turnbull Government have shown their disdain for our early childhood educators and their representatives. They don't have a workforce strategy, and they axed the workforce professional development program. ‘+ Labor will sit down and work with our early childhood educators and their representatives and develop a plan to start recognising the work they do. {All electoral communications authorised by Noah Carroll ALP Canberra
