SAFETY IN THE PHYSICS LABORATORY: STUDENT CONTRACT

Physics is a hands-on laboratory class. While I do not anticipate any significant safety hazards, some of our
investigations may present the possibility of injury if performed carelessly. To ensure a safe laboratory, the
following rules and procedures must be followed at all times. Before a student can participate in laboratory
activities, this safety contract must be read, and the student and parent /guardian must sign the agreement.

1. Never work in the lab unless a teacher is present and aware of what you are doing.
2. Conduct yourself in a responsible matter at all times.
3. Follow all directions carefully. Before you begin, ask questions about anything that is unclear.
4. When indicated by the teacher, you must wear safety glasses and/or earplugs.
5. Do not wander around the room, distract other students, or interfere with others’ experiments.
6. Do not eat food or drink beverages during lab activities.
7. Keep the work area free of any books and materials not needed for the experiment.
8. Never perform any unauthorized experiments.
9. Know the location and operating procedures of all safety equipment. Read all safety and operating
instructions thoroughly before beginning an experiment.
10. If equipment is broken or not working properly, stop using it immediately and report the problem to the
teacher.
11. If you observe unsafe conditions or if someone is injured, inform the teacher immediately before doing
anything else.
12. Dress appropriately for lab activities. Avoid wearing bulky or loose-fitting clothing or dangling jewelry. Pin
or tie back long hair, and roll up loose sleeves. Wear closed toe shoes.
13. When removing an electrical plug from a socket, grasp the plug, not the cord. Your hands must be
completely dry before touching any electrical equipment.
14. Always assume that a wire is live. Always assume that the outlets are set at a high voltage.
15. Clean and organize the lab bench. Dispose of any waste materials. The lab should look the same at the
beginning of the lab as it did at the beginning.
16. When you finished your work, check that the water is turned off and that electrical circuits are disconnected.

I, ______________________________________, have read and agree to follow all of the safety rules set
forth in this contract. I realize that I must obey these rules to ensure my own safety and that of my fellow
students and teacher. I understand that any violation of this contract that results in unsafe conditions in the
laboratory may result in being removed from the laboratory and/or receiving a failing grade.
