1. What steps did you go through to create this lesson? With whom did you talk, discuss, or
edit your lesson?
For our service learning project, Madeline Arndt and I wanted to create a mentor program
between my 8th graders and her 2nd graders. My students are in the “Art of Storytellng”
unit, so I thought that they could write their own children’s books.
2. How did the SOLs and Objectives help focus your instruction?
I relied on the objectives concerning storytelling and writing.
6. How effective was the assessment you chose to use? (If no assessment was used, what will
the future assessment be and how will you gauge its effectiveness?)
The final products served as a good assessment in seeing whether or not the 8th graders
understood what good storytelling was.
7. To what degree do you feel that this lesson was a success? What evidence do you have for
the success of the lesson? (Hint: Student learning is the key to a lesson’s success!)
This lesson was very successful, in that the students were able to work with younger
students to create one product that highlighted an issue that they feel passionate about.
8. How did the time spent preparing for your lesson contribute to it’s success?
My preparation and communication with my cooperating teacher, Madeline, her cooperating
teacher, and the principal helped the lesson run smoothly.
9. If you could do this lesson again with the same students, would you do anything differently?
If so, what?
I would give more guidance before students wrote their children’s book. I assumed that they
would know what to do and had to give guidance midway through their writing process.
10. Any last comments/reflections about your lesson?
I am so excited that Dr. Luecke and the rest of the 8th grade teachers plan to implement this
lesson/project into next year’s curriculum!
