She knows the course material and can communicate it well. She demonstrates a genuine concern for students and does what she can to help us understand the information and how to apply it practically. | think that this is partly because she is a great person. ‘+ Marybeth Missenda really bought CIH to surface and broadened my understanding overall. | could not understand before why there was no textbook. But, | now understand that applying real-life researched material to help us gain an understanding of the concepts and the application in our future. She is very passionate about teaching and in having us learn the CIH concepts and approaches. | really appreciated this class. * Marybeth Missenda is an exceptional instructor in her field. She applies real life situations to the subject matter and she comes across as confident in what she delivers. She answer students questions promptly and if she doesn't have the answer at the time, she ensures that we receive it within 24 hours through Canvas. Truly an outstanding instructor and | look forward to taking more courses taught by her. Job well done! + An excellent introductory course, quite appropriate for someone like me who is exploring the theoretical concept of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the first time. | am highly delighted with the comprehensive overview and looking forward to continuing my new diversification in my medical career. Excellent professor and course! Highly recommend taking this to other studantss, 2018 hitpssimuih.campustabs.comvfaculyifacullyReporting/0526¢959-9752-06'1-B03-00031586a7¢/cb83064-261 7-s169-B0d3-8c0808295408 6018 Course Evaluation Summary - Campus Labs + I thought Marybeth did an excellent job of reintroducing students to an academic environment. This was the first college course I've taken in nearly 20 years, and | found Marybeth's direction in how to conduct research, how to work ona collaborative paper, and specific instructions for discussion posts all very helpful. | feel much more confident in my decision to enroll in courses now that | have had this reintroduction to an academic environment and now that my confidence in my abilities has been bolstered, Thank you! * | thought the course was very well organized. | saw advantages to the collaborative paper, but still it didn’t seem as constructive in terms of developing collaboration. That's difficult to do with an online course. Sometimes it seemed that the readings were redundant and the quizzes, while necessary as a form of assessment, seemed silly at times because so many of the questions were so detailed. Most were details that | wouldn't likely need on a regular basis. Overall, it was a very useful class and | am glad it is a requirement for this degree. * | felt there was a lot of content and material to cover in this class. | feel as if a student should have taken and passed MUIHS50 prior to taking this class. © Great instructor, and always willing and ready to help answer any questions. ‘© Marybeth was absolutely amazing. This trimester has been difficult for me as I've been out of school for a long time, have to work night shifts and have kids at home! The online learning and APA got me! She has been very supportive and I've learned so much! Thank you :-) * Marybeth provided exceptional feedback on assignments in order to help me improve for future work. + lenjoyed all the content that was provided by this course, and felt like | really developed an understanding of integrative health that | had never had before. | appreciated Marybeth's unique perspective and presentation of the material. | wish we had heard more from her directly instead of reading separate articles and research and then having to put the pieces all together ourselves in the last couple of modules. * This course was challenging, but well worth it. | felt | worked harder than the 1.5 credits it is worth. It should be worth 2 credits. The workload was appropriate, and the collaborative work was a great learning experience. The instructor has high standards and brings the students up to her bar. Her grading of papers is thorough and thoughtful. Overall it was a great experience. | really enjoyed taking this course. It provided such great content and information regarding the entire field of integrative health and it really helped to broaden thy" “""° hitpssimuih.campustabs.comvfaculyifacullyReporting/0526¢959-9752-06'1-B03-00031586a7¢/cb83064-261 7-s169-B0d3-8c0808295408 6018 Course Evaluation Summary - Campus Labs perspective of the current state of medicine in our country. It was a great introductory course as | start my journey here at MUIH. | appreciate knowing more about CIH. | will be able to speak about the field with understanding and certainly now. The wording of the quizzes was sometimes difficult, | felt like they could be more concise in ensuring we know the key take away points of the Module. | am still having a little trouble compiling research and finding research. My writing skills have improved and | look forward to honing them more throughout my academic career. liked what feedback i received. Thank you for all your work and for the school. | fundamentally disagree with online learning environments. My experience is they do not teach or grow ability in critical thinking they teach acceptance of the, and conformity with bureaucratic standards and methods of evaluation. When | am finished with my work for these online classes | do not find | have retained information | have spent undue amounts of time checking boxes and doing busy work rather than digesting and comprehending information. Struggled to keep up with all the reading, and paper writing! liked the course material and thought Marybeth was a great instructor. She is clearly very passionate about the subject and wants us to understand the concepts given here. However, | found the course load to be very heavy and had a hard time feeling like | really learned everything | wanted to learn, | found myself focusing more on getting all the assignments done by the deadline and don't think | focused on the quality as much as | would have liked. I wish there were fewer assignments or less extra research required in addition to the readings and videos we already have to view. | understand this is to further enhance our knowledge but instead of walking away feeling like | had learned about the topics in depth, I felt overwhelmed and a bit stressed about it all. I feel like have a general understanding of CIH, but no where near what | thought | would after all the materials given. | just simply didn't have the time to really study it all. Thank you Marybeth for presenting the material in a way that was easy to follow, providing visual, audio and written material caters to multiple learning styles. Linking the calendar syllabus and canvas locations made it easier to navigate through the coursework. The presentation of this course was well thought-out and your dedication to providing an exceptional educational experience is apparent in every communication. It was a pleasure studying under your facilitation. The coursework was a bit too heavy and it was a lot of information at once. I would have appreciated a longer course timeline, so that it broke up the material. This type of course was very in depth and | felt Ineeded more time to grasp it all. The collaboration paper was the hardest part of my academic career so far. | would have also liked books, rather than reading so much on canvas. Overall, | am satisfied with what | learned about myself and complimentary health and | can gladly say I have a solid foundation for what each concept is. + I'm am adamant in my desire to see this course as designed taught over a full trimester. While | learned a tremendous amount | think that the course material and the teacher deserve far more time and attention then this seven weeks or so allows. | feel that I would have greatly benefited from taking one time with each of the modules and this course is so critical importance to the rest of my work at MUIH, | am disappointed that I can't have more time with this material ‘* This course could be excellent, however, quite frankly it requires a shit ton of work relative to it's 1.5 credits it earns you. Great subject matter, | like the group project, however the weekly work requirement is a bit much. | did more work for this than for my three credit in-person classes. Otherwise a great class. * Thank you for you support. + [really appreciated Marybeth's approach to this course. She is patient and will go the extra mile to explain concepts that may have been difficult for the class to grasp. | hope to take more classes with her in the future, * I can't speak highly enough of Marybeth's instruction. Her availability and willingness to provide personalized direction and the detail in her encouraging feedback was extraordinary. Having heard what a great instructor she was definitely influenced my decision to enroll in this section. | did not regret that! There was a great balance in the instructional material between the positive and negative health impacts for each wellness input, especially evidenced by the environmental wellness input. The instructor was mindful of the doom and gloom that can accompany the awareness of toxicity in the world, and | appreciated the compassion with which that information was shared. | really liked the discussion model. I did not grow to dread them--a measure of quality design! It was effective to be in small groups, and | built a sense of camaraderie through our assigned discussions with the same people despite not having conversations beyond that context. It was nice to trade off as initiators and responders. The only suggestion | Mar 26,2018 have is to extend the deadline for initiators to respond to the responders. Although, hitpssimuih.campustabs.comvfaculyifacullyReporting/0526¢959-9752-06'1-B03-00031586a7¢/cb83064-261 7-s169-B0d3-8c0808295408 6018 Course Evaluation Summary - Campus Labs it seems pretty reasonable to request in advance that students be available from 5 12am ona Saturday night twice during the class, | had commitments that prevented me from checking the discussion board both nights. | crossed my fingers that no one new would engage with me in that time frame, which ended up working out. Perhaps it would be possible to give until Sunday or Monday night if grading can be postponed. There may be some opportunity for updating or expanding the assignment rubrics for the wellness self-assessment tool. Marybeth mentioned this in response to some of my questions surrounding my social wellness input topic, Since the research for some social wellness approaches is not all positive (e.g., Facebook depresses vs. Facebook connects), the assessment of my own research didn't really abide by the metric provided, It seemed as if the specificity of the rubric was sometimes in conflict-though not contradictory, per se- -with the specificity of the assignment instructions. | think more general descriptors in the rubrics may serve the course well. For the annotated bibliography in particular, it would be helpful to have more instruction surrounding validity and even the identification of a study type before submission. (| reached out to Marybeth independently for this information, and the depth and attention she give this answer was so helpful that maybe that could just be used in the course.) And a concern that doesn't belong to this course but intersects with it: the library resources, Accessing the library resources was incredibly frustrating. Beyond the fact that EBSCO was down for much of our final weeks in class, it is so hard to navigate the resources when they are operating properly. This must be redesigned for the sake of student success and sanity. It takes about seven clicks from the website or the Canvas Library site to actually reach a database, and it's usually by means of an external document that gives me further instructions. Can we centralize that? It's tedious and frustrating. | think this daily reality made things worse when EBSCO could not be accessed because the source of the problem was not clear from a student perspective. | had bookmarked EBSCO because it always took so long to find, so | couldn't tell if my bookmark was broken or EBSCO was down, This added to general confusion and frustration, In summary, Marybeth is fantastic! Marybeth is super in explaining the context of the material. I'm grateful for her expertise. | did find the layout of the class to be a bit jumbled and sometimes hard to follow along. Starting the next module while still doing the previous one did get a little confusing. If | had been taking more courses at the same time it would have been hard to keep it all straight. Mar 26,2014 hitpssimuih.campustabs.comvfaculyifacullyReporting/0526¢959-9752-06'1-B03-00031586a7¢/cb83064-261 7-s169-B0d3-8c0808295408 19 6018 Course Evaluation Surmary- Campus Labs ‘* Marybeth is an outstanding instructor. She goes out of her way to help each and every one of her students truly grasp the subject matter. It is so apparent how much Marybeth cares about the class and everyone in it. Her detailed feedback to projects and assignments is very appreciated, and she is always so responsive to emails, She encourages communication and never makes you feel bad or silly for asking questions. She also goes out of her way to record lectures, which I found to be incredibly helpful. | also enjoyed her live session, as it was a great opportunity to ask questions and it made the online learning experience much more interactive. The only suggestion | have is to be alittle bit more flexible when it comes to extensions. Specifically on the discussions, when initiators only had between the hours of 5PM and midnight to respond to posts. I think, in some cases, extensions should be granted. ‘+ Overall | learned a lot and enjoyed this course. It especially helped me to improve my ability to research. | would have liked to have received the article on ‘how to read a paper’ earlier in the course. | found that the lists of supplemental resources were so extensive that | could not even imagine having time to look at them. It seems that we covered a lot of material in a short amount of time. | felt that doubling up on wellness inputs in the last week of the course caused me to not dive deeply into either of them. | think that we could have started the Logs earlier so that we would have been able to do more of them (ex. spiritual and social would not be optional). My instructor supported me greatly through this course and gave me the feedback and support that | needed. | especially enjoyed the lectures and preferred the lectures where we can see the instructor speaking to the ones that are simply just slides. thank you! * thank you ‘* Marybeth is a wonderful Instructor. She is passionate and dedicated in preparing her students for a working career in their chosen field. | also greatly appreciate that she always made herself available for assistance. ‘* Marybeth did an excellent job in this course. I really loved the wellness assignment tools she had us develop. * Overall | enjoyed the key concepts addressed in this course. At times, the amount of material being published on the course was overwhelming. | would suggest this class being offered in a longer period of time, with textbooks required. Since the information was all provided online, it was an overwhelming amount of resources. Mar 26, 2018 hitpssimuih.campustabs.comvfaculyifacullyReporting/0526¢959-9752-06'1-B03-00031586a7¢/cb83064-261 7-s169-B0d3-8c0808295408 6018 Course Evaluation Summary - Campus Labs H * Professor Missenda is an excellent teacher. She is able to answer questions in a multitude of ways depending on the approach of the student. She is always willing to be available and help you better understand the material. The one negative is the class times. We had a 3 credit class in two weekends and one day. This pushed all the assignment due dates together and it was overwhelming to complete, especially when taking other classes. We needed more time. + This was a great course. My only comment was that it was not long enough. This is, a three credit course but we had less time than the other three credit courses. The time is really imporatant because we are making medicines and they take time. * | agreed with other students in that most of us already knew a thing or two about infusions and decoctions. Maybe topical preparations or other units could be taught earlier in the course as to give more time for the more difficult/messy preparations. The class was excellent otherwise!
