Jung’
Jung’s Analytical Psychology
Jung stated that the roots
of personality go back
to the dawn of human
existence and are
contained in a
collective unconscious.

The collective
unconscious contains
emotionally laden ideas
and images—
archetypes.

Theories

The Structure of Personality

• Psyche or self – the center of the whole
personality and consists of a number of
interacting systems.
• Ego – center of consciousness
• Personal unconscious – similar to Freudian
unconscious (repressed or forgotten
memories)
• Persona – mediates the individuality and
expectations of others.
• Shadow – the personal characteristics and
potentials that the individual is unaware of.
• Anima – feminine side of men, irrational moods
and feelings
• Animus – masculine side of women, thinking and
reasoning

PSy204MA Advance Personality
Theories

The Mandala
• The self is often symbolized by a
mandala (Sanskrit word for circle).
• It represents the self in unity.
• It is the life’s goal, a goal that we
constantly strive for but rarely reach.
• The self only emerges when various
components of the personality become
fully developed and individuated – a
conscious ego that is between
consciousness and unconsciouness.

Theories

The yin and the yang

To actualize and fully realize the self,

one must overcome their fear of
the unconscious, prevent their
persona from dominating their
personality, recognize the dark side
of themselves (their shadows), and
muster even greater courage to
face their anima or animus.
