t was written in Shanghai in 1945 to celebrate the defeat of Japan and the liberation of China at the

end of the Second Sino-Japanese War (World War II). The music and words of the song are both by
Chen Gexin (link is external) (陳歌辛), who also used the pen names Lin Mei (林枚) and Qing Yu (慶
餘). Because its Mandarin title is also a common Chinese New Year greeting and the song celebrates
the arrival of spring, it quickly became associated almost exclusively with Chinese New Year
celebrations and remains a part of the season's musical canon.

GONG XI, GONG XI

Every street and every lane
Every one is greeting
When we meet and say hello
They all greet to Gong Xi
CHORUS:
Gong Xi, Gong Xi, Gong Xi Ni Ya
Gong Xi, Gong Xi, Gong Xi Ni

Spring time will be coming soon

Bringing us the good news
Soft warm breeze is blowing
Giving life to good earth
Icy snow has melted
See the plum blossom
Morning time is coming
Hear the rooster crowing

After all the hardship

Now the work is finished
Waiting with excitement
Spring time is upon us

(Ps. 92:1), “It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to Your name, O Most
High.” You may wonder, “Why is it good to give thanks to the Lord when you face difficult
trials? Why is it good to sing praises to His name when evil people seem to be prospering?”
The psalmist here gives us three reasons:

It is good to give thanks to the Lord because of who He is and what He has done; because He
will triumph over the wicked; and, because He causes the righteous to flourish.
