Classroom Chemistry- Day 3

Grade: 5 Subject: Science Unit: Classroom Chemistry Lesson Duration: 25 mins

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes: (for the unit)

5-2 Recognize the importance of accuracy in observation and measurement; and, with guidance, apply
suitable methods to record, compile, interpret and evaluate observations and measurements

5-7 Describe the probertites and interactions of various household liquids and solids, and interpret their
interactions

Specific Learning Outcomes: (for this lesson)

5.1 (Focus) Students will ask questions that lead to exploration and investigation

5.4 (Explore and Investigate) Students will select appropriate materials and identify how they will be used

5-7.1 Students will be able to identify examples of the following types of mixtures: two or more solids, a
solid and a liquid, and two or more liquids

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:

1. Learn about the appropriate tools to use when separating solid and liquid mixtures

2. Discover the possibility of separating solids from solids, solids from liquids, and liquids from liquids

ASSESSMENTS

Materials: Key Questions:

*Power point slideshow Essential Question (for unit): How might different
substances interact with one another?
*Oats
Questions for lesson:
*Rice
-What is the difference between a mixture and a
*Water
solution?
*Food colouring
-What are some tools we can use to separate mixtures?
*Vegetable Oil
-What are some real life situations where we separate
mixtures?

PROCEDURE

Introduction (2 mins):

Hook/Attention Grabber:

-Review last class: Have students describe the difference between a mixture and a solution

-Go over class agenda

Advance Organizer/Agenda:

1. Review last class

2. How can we separate mixtures?

3. Difference between a solution and a suspension

4. Experiment

Body (20 mins):

Learning Activity #1 (7 mins): How to separate mixtures

-Use power point as guideline

-Explain that there are different ways to separate substances, but it all depends on what materials we are
using

-Mixture of solids: sand and rocks can be separated with a sifter or strainer

-Mixture of solids and liquids: sand and water can be separated using a coffee filter

-Mixture of liquids: water and oil, water and dish soap. Liquids can be separated by density

-Go over other ways to separate mixtures on power point: magnets, syringes, etc

-Define difference between a ‘Suspension’ and a ‘Solution’

Transition to next activity (1 min):

-Explain process of experiment

Learning Activity #2 (12 mins): Experiment

-Perform experiment in front of class and have volunteers help with different steps

-Mix rice and oats to show solid mixture and explain separation process. See if students can identify what
tool they would use to separate the substances
-Mix water and food colouring to show liquid mixture. See if students can identify whether this is a
solution or a suspension

-Mix water and oil to show liquid mixture. See if students can identify whether this is a solution or a
suspension

Closure (5 mins):

-Watch video to review what we have learned

Transition To Next Lesson:

-Explain that next week we will look over different interactions with different substances

-Explain that there will be a mid-point quiz next Wednesday
