INTRODUCTION

These instructions cover the installation, operation and

maintenance of Texas S.W. Cryogenics Centrifugal Pumps.

It is important that these instructions are followed in order to assure the performance for which
the pumps have been designed.

The pump should be used for only those liquids specified on the order, and operated within
the range specified.

Please contact Texas S.W. Cryogenics for any additional information.

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 2

DESCRIPTION

The pump is specifically designed for the transfer of cryogenic liquids. It incorporates a
metallic bellows mechanical seal that seals the shaft against static and dynamic leakage.
Precision construction and carefully selected materials produce a compact, lightweight pump
with superior performance.

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 3

INSTALLATION

GENERAL

Each pump is thoroughly inspected, both in the manufacturing process and as a final product,
to assure trouble-free operation.

Use care in handling the unit, so that stress will not be imposed on the pump. Never place
slings around the pump shaft.

All equipment should be thoroughly checked as soon as possible after receipt against the
packing slip or other shipping document. Shortages or damages should be reported
immediately to the local agent of the transportation company.

If the unit is received and not installed immediately, it should be stored in a moisture-free
location protected from any contamination. The factory installed covers should be kept in
place until the pump is ready for installation. Parts subject to attack by moisture and corrosion
should be inspected periodically and immediately prior to installation.

The pump should be installed on a rigid foundation as close as practical to the storage vessel
with piping simple and direct for both suction and discharge lines.

A short section of flexible line should be installed on the suction side of the pump. The suction
line should be as short and direct as possible. Suction piping should be at least the same size
as that of the suction port. Bends and fittings should be kept to a minimum. If elbows are
required, they should be the long radius type. The suction line should have a gate valve or ball
valve the same size as the suction line.

3-1

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 4

Do not weld pipes while they are attached to the pump. Inspect the piping and pump suction
and discharge cavities for foreign matter and clean them thoroughly before final connections
are made.

On flanged units, the faces must be parallel, mating together without effort and with bolt holes
properly aligned. On threaded units the pump and threaded connection must be in proper
alignment.

Do not spring suction or discharge line to make the connection. After suction and discharge
lines are connected, turn the pump shaft by hand to assure free rotation. ·

The suction line should incorporate a safety relief valve between the pump and the main
suction valve to relieve pressures when the pump is valved off after operation. The relief valve
should have a setting of at least 25 PSI above the maximum suction pressure. A pressure
gauge installed in the pump suction line is recommended.

A suction strainer should be installed at the pump inlet.

The discharge line should contain a by-pass return line to the vapor space in the storage
vessel and/or a vent to atmosphere for rapid cool-down and priming. A pressure gauge
installed in the pump discharge line is recommended.

SUCTION PRESSURE and NPSH

The pump requires a net positive suction head (NPSH) above vapor pressure, measured at
the center line of the suction, equal to or greater than that shown on the nameplate. To
compensate for head losses and temperature gains in the suction line, the storage vessel
pressure may need to be the increased 5 to 10 PSI above the liquid vapor pressure. If the
pump does not prime and deliver rated flow, continue to increase the pressure until rated flow
is obtained. Once this pressure has been determined, the pump should operate at
approximately the same pressure each time it is used. Repeated starts can damage the
pump and motor so establishing a starting procedure is important. Although the seal is
designed for suction pressures above those normally encountered, for maximum seal life, the
pump should be operated as close as possible to the minimum suction pressure required for
satisfactory operation.

ROTATION

The direction of rotation is in accordance with the directional arrow appearing on the pump
volute. Damage may result from running the pump in reverse.

3-2

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 5

OPERATION

WARNING: Never run the pump dry or after an extended cool-down period.
Never run the pump without proper lubrication.

The following operations are to be performed only after the suction and discharge lines have
been connected, purged and the receiver valves opened for delivery.

A. Referring to the "Typical Flow Diagram", open valve "A" slowly. This will allow liquid to flow
from the storage tank to the pump.

8. Storage tank pressure should be noted to ascertain that it is within the required limits. If
this pressure is less than required, open valve "E" (Pressurizing Valve) to the pressurized.
When the storage tank pressure reaches the minimum required, close valve "E".

C. Open valve "B" (Priming Valve); the cool-down cycle of the pump will begin with the flow of
a
liquid. The pump and piping will serve as vaporizer during the cool-down period and will
start a pressure build-up in the storage tank.

(Note: The system may also be vented to the atmosphere or to the receiving vessel.)
Continue this operation until the frost layer on the pump housing indicates liquid in the volute
of the pump (5 to 15 minutes after liquid enters the pump). Open valve "G" (Discharge valve)
and start the driver. NEVER START THE PUMP AGAINST A COMPLETELY CLOSED
SYSTEM OR AT FULL FLOW. THE DISCHARGE VALVE MAY NEED TO BE THROTTLED
INITIALLY TO AID IN ACHIEVING FULL PRIME.

4-1

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 6

WARNING

IF PUMP DOES NOT PRIME WITHIN 15 SECONDS, SHUT PUMP OFF AND REPEAT
STARTING PROCEDURE.

D. Slowly close valve "B" (Priming Valve). Valve "A" (MAIN SUCTION VALVE) should never
be used to control pump pressures; valve "A" is to remain FULLY OPENED throughout the
pumping cycle.

E. When the receiver is full or the pumping operation is complete, shut down the pump, close
valve "G" and open valve "B". This equalizes line pressure and storage tank pressure.

F. Close valves on the storage tank.

G. Close valves on the receiver and open hose bleed off valve "H".

H. Close valves ""A", "B",", and slowly open valve "G"; this relieves gas pressure on the
pumping system.

I. Check the storage tank pressure and reduce if necessary by venting through valve "I".

CENTRIFUGAL REMOVAL AND REPAIR

Disconnect the pump suction and discharge lines.

Provide a clean work area for further disassembly.

Remove the screws, washer, volute, and gasket.

Remove the impeller screw and washer. (The screw has a right hand thread.)

Carefully remove the inducer or impeller cap and the impeller with key. Do not use force that
might damage the inducer or impeller.

Remove the seal ring and shims from the shaft.

Slip the backplate, complete with seal assembly, from the bearing housing.

Remove the insulation ring and slinger.

Remove the seal assembly by unscrewing it in a clockwise direction. The seal assembly has a
left hand thread.

7-1

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 10

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that the removal and installation
of the bellow seal assembly be made with the use
of a special tool, part number BP000067.

In an emergency the seal may be replaced

using a spanner wrench or pins and a bar.
However, extreme care should be taken so that
the carbon face of the seal is not scratched or
damaged in any way.

Remove the seal bushing and O-ring.

7-2

M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 11

REASSEMBLY

The parts should be arranged on a clean surface in the order of disassembly, substituting new
replacements for worn parts.

Assemble the parts in the reverse order of disassembly, refer to the assembly drawings and
note the following:

The shaft seal assembly and the rotating seal ring have both been .polished to a super
precision finish at the factory and must be kept clean. Do NOT TOUCH SEAL FACES WITH
FINGERS. The length of the bellows has been preset at the factory and must not be altered.

This pump is furnished with two a-rings at the seal and a bronze seal bushing. The smaller
cross section 0-ring is placed in the seal cavity of the backplate. The seal bushing is placed in
the backplate on top of the smaller a-ring. The larger a-ring is installed on the bellows
assembly. Then the seal assembly is installed over the seal bushing and tightened into the
backplate. Establish seal compression as follows:

With the rotating ring just touching the seal assembly, measure the distance from the rotating
ring to the end of the shaft. Measure to the nearest thousandth's of an inch.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE BACKPLATE IS FIRMLY SEATED AGAINST THE

INSULATOR AND INTERMEDIATE WHEN MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE.

NOTE

ALL PARTS IN THE CENTRIFUGAL THAT ARE IN CONTACT

WITH LIQUID OXYGEN MUST BE CLEANED WITH
TRICHLOROETHYLENE.

7-3
M:\MANU\BP000030 Rev. D 09/01/15 12
Compress the bellows, by pressing on the rotating seal ring until it bottoms, but not more than
.100 inches. In the compressed position (with the rotating ring firmly seated against the shaft
shoulder) again measure the distance from the rotating ring to the end of the shaft to the
nearest thousandth of an inch.

The difference between the two measurements is the seal compression.

The seal compression should be .035" to .050".

Install the required number of shims between the shaft shoulder and the seal ring to establish
the seal compression as noted on the assembly drawing. Check seal compression after
installing shims.

CAUTION: NEVER HAVE MORE COMPRESSION OF THE BELLOWS THAN THE

AMOUNT OF CARBON EXTENDING BEYOND THE METAL HOLDER OF THE
BELLOWS ASSEMBLY.

The impeller screw with its companion washer should be torqued to approximately 140inch
pounds.

The screws that join the volute and pump assembly are to be tightened lightly and uniformly
around the circumference drawing the gaskets squarely into place. The screws are then to be
tightened until the gaskets are seated completely. A check should be made to determine that
the pump shaft rotates freely after seating the gaskets. After the pump has been completely
reassembled, it should be purged to remove any foreign material that may have accumulated
during the assembly operation, and the fluid ports sealed until installation.

Bearing life
General information Required information
Bearing life can be calculated for that part of the load/ When requesting a bearing life calculation from Parker
life curve (shown below) that is designated 'Bearing Hannifin (Pumps and Motor Division), the following
fatigue'. 'Rotating group fatigue and wear' and 'Other' information (where applicable) should be provided:
caused by material fatigue, fluid contamination, etc. - A short presentation of the application
should also be taken into consideration when estimating
the service life of a motor/pump in a specific application. - F11 or F12 size and version
- Duty cycle (pressure and speed versus time
Bearing life calculations are mainly used when compar-
at given displacements)
ing different frame sizes. Bearing life, designated B10 (or
L10), is dependent of system pressure, operating speed, - Low system pressure
external shaft loads, fluid viscosity in the case, and fluid - Case fluid viscosity
contamination level. - Life probability (B10, B20, etc.)
The B10 value means that 90% of the bearings survive, - Operating mode (pump or motor)
at a minimum, the number of hours calculated. Statisti-
cally, 50% of the bearings will survive at least five times - Direction of rotation (L or R)
the B10 life. - External shaft loads (Forces, Gear, Belt, Cardan
or none)
For forces please provide:
- Axial load, Fixed radial load, Bending moment, Ro-
tating radial load and distance flange to radial load.
For Gear please provide:
Life expectancy - Pitch diameter, Pressure angle, Spiral angle, Distan-
(logarithmic scale) ce flange – gearwheel (mid) and Gearwheel spiral
Other direction (R or L).
causes For Belt please provide:
- Pretension, Coefficient of friction, Angle of contact,
Distance flange – pulley (mid) and Diameter pulley.
Bearing For Cardan please provide:
fatigue
- Shaft angle, Distance flange – first joint and distan-
ce between joints
- Angle of attack (α) as defined below

Efficiency
Because of its high overall efficiency, driving a motor/
pump from series F11/F12 requires less fuel or electric 210 bar
power. Also, it allows the use of a small reservoir and 100%
heat exchanger, which in turn reduce cost, weight, and 420 bar
installation size.

Noise level
Series F11/F12 feature low noise levels from low to high
[dB(A)]
speeds and pressures.
As an example, the diagram to the right shows the noise 90
level of an F12-30.
The noise level is measured in a semi-anechoic room, 85
1 m behind the unit.
The noise level for a particular motor/pump may vary 80
±2 dB(A) compared to what is shown in the diagram. 5000 rpm

a pump, in either direction, but at a lower selfpriming

Operating above the selfpriming speed (refer to L, R

F11 saw motors

Series F11 motors have proven suitable for demand- F11 with built-in Saw bar supported
ing applications such as chain saws. Primarily due to make-up valve directly on the
the 40° bent-axis design, spherical pistons (with lami- motor flange
nated piston rings) and gear synchronization, very high
speeds are permissible. Not even low temperatures at
Feed
start-up affect reliability.
cylinder
To further enhance the saw function and, at the same
time, reduce weight, cost and installation dimensions, a
specific saw motor has been developed (frame sizes
-10, -14 and -19; refer to the illustration to the right)
which is specifically dedicated to bar saws. The motor
allows the saw bar bearings to be mounted directly on
the motor housing, and the sprocket installs on the mo-
tor shaft without additional bearings.
For more detailed information (available versions, order-
ing codes, installation dimensions, etc.), refer to 'F11
Saw Motors' (catalogue HY30-8245).

F11 and F12 fan motors

Frame sizes -10, -12, -14, -19 (F11) and -30 (F12) are
also available as 'fan motors' with a built-in check valve Built -in
make-up
(refer to the schematic below) and CETOP mounting
valve
flange. Just like the saw motor, the fan motor can be op-
erated at very high speeds without reliability problems.
The fan is usually installed directly on the motor shaft
without additional bearing support.
Additional information (available versions, ordering
codes, installation dimensions, etc.) is available in

Type BT brake valve

When a motor (in an open loop system) is used in a
hydrostatic vehicle transmission, the motor may operate
faster than what corresponds to the available pump flow
(e.g. in a steep downhill); this can lead to motor cavita-
tion and loss of braking power.
The BT brake valve prevents cavitation by throttling
the return flow from the motor as soon as the pressure BT brake
level in the inlet port decreases to approximately 35 bar. valve block
At the same time, motor braking is provided when the
pump flow decreases or is shut off.
The BT brake valve can be supplied with various
optional functions such as a mechanical brake release
valve and a flushing valve.

Viscosity
The ideal operating range is15 to 30 mm2/s [cSt].
At operating temperature, the viscosity (of the drain
fluid) should be kept above 8 mm2/s [cSt].
At start-up, the viscosity should not exceed
1000 mm2/s [cSt]

Filtration
To obtain the highest service life of the F11/F12,
the fluid cleanliness should meet or exceed
ISO code 18/13 (ISO 4406).
During normal operating conditions, a 10 µm (absolute)
filter is recommended.

Case pressure
The tables below show the highest recommended case
pressure as a function of shaft speed.
‘Nominal’ shaft seal life can be expected at a certain
speed and the corresponding max case pressure. Seal
life will be shorter, however, at unfavourable operat-
ing conditions (high temperature, low oil viscosity,
contaminated oil).

Selection Process
Steps In Selecting A Curved Jaw Coupling

JW

JW
Step 1: Determine the nominal torque of your application: Step 5: Next find the columns listing Tkn and Tkmax values listed in
Nm and compare them against the DTkmax figure for your
in-lbs = Tkn = HPx63025 application. Make sure that the spider/coupling size values are

JIS

JIS
RPM larger than the application values.

Step 2: Calculate your Application Service Factor using the charts below. Step 6: Once the size is selected using the torque values, check the table
The total Service Factor (K) will be: on page CJ-9 to make sure the bore size needed will fit in the

CJ

CJ
coupling.
K = K1 x K2 x K3
Step 7: Double check the overall dimensions of the coupling to ensure

SF

SF
Step 3: Calculate the design torque (DTkmax) of your application. that it will fit in the space allowed for the coupling in the
application.
Design Torque (DTkmax) =
Nominal Torque x service factor. *This selection process is based on application factors only. A selection process is also

MC

available using DIN 740 part 2 standard. Consult with Lovejoy Engineering for details.
Step 4: Using the Elastomer Torque Ratings Tables on pages CJ-6 and
CJ-7 select the urethane shore hardness which best corresponds
to your relative damping needs in the application.

The values regarding displacement are provided assuming normal operating conditions (i.e. temperature, torque with nominal rating of the coupling, speed/
RPM rating of the coupling, and misalignment). Careful installation (i.e. alignment) and periodic inspection should be provided to provide the optimum life of the
coupling. Special consideration should be given as to the position of the shafts and the amount of axial movement the coupling will be exposed to. The more
ED

ED

accurate the alignment of the coupling, will result in greater life of the elastomer. A coupling guard and rotating equipment safety procedures should always be
followed. Please consult the Lovejoy web site at www.lovejoy-inc.com for assembly instructions of the curved jaw coupling.

Servo And Positioning Drives

The GS Series provides a zero backlash, flexible connection for servo and positioning drives. An added benefit of the GS Series is its damping capabilities.
For applications that have vibrations at critical speeds, the GS Series coupling can provide a zero backlash solution for vibration problems.
CJ

coupling is provided assembled under prestress. The GS Series can be used in a variety of

JW

JW
different applications requiring precision and accuracy.

The GS Series spider features a straight center of the spider tooth, providing higher

JIS

JIS
stiffness due to coupling prestress. The crowning of the ends of the spider legs allows for
misalignment, while the curved jaws and solid spider center provide high-speed capability.

The jaws of the hubs and the spider legs are chamfered to provide easy assembly. The GS

CJ

CJ
Series coupling design also allows the blind assembly in tight spaces. Raised spider dots on
the legs of the spider ensure proper spacing of hubs and spider.

Proper installation of the coupling can provide isolation of electrical currents. Check the CL

SF

SF
dimension listed on this page to ensure the proper spacing between spiders and hubs.

The GS Series coupling has spiders available in four different shore hardnesses. Each spider
offers benefits for different vibratory, environmental, and torque transmission requirements.
