A Guide to Preparing PowerPoint Presentations for the Oral Defense

PART 1-CONTENT PROPER

 Prepare a total of 25-30 slides only (including the title slide and references)
 First slide has the research title, the researchers’ names, and the section and school
name.
 For the sequence of your presentation, just follow chapters 1-5.
 Cover the whole chapters 1-5, however, allot more slides for chapters 4-5 as they are
the most important focus of your presentation.
 Do not feel compelled to include not-so-important details in your presentation; just
cover what is significant.
 Do not include the abstract anymore in your PowerPoint
 Organize your presentation using bullets (I do not like to see long paragraphs)
 If you present tables, do not include paragraphs of explanation about the tables
anymore as you are supposed to explain them verbally during the defense.
 Citations where necessary must be included in the presentation (strictly follow APA
6th edition guidelines).

PART 2- TECHNICALITIES (Apply those techniques/principles you learned from our

EmTech lesson)

 All titles and subtitles must be in bold except for the very content of the slides.
 Use appropriate template (academic template); never use templates with striking
colors.
 Apply not more than two animations and transitions should you decide to have some
or apply none at all (this is again academic presentation so the use of animations and
transitions is really not the priority).
 Never set timings nor incorporate sounds in your presentations.
 Use proper font style (more likely those SANS) and font size (depending on the font
you have chosen).
 Use colors responsibly and judiciously including color contrasts.
 Use SmartArts, Shapes, and Charts in your presentation (again, I don't expect dull,
long paragraphs in your presentations).
 The use of hyperlinking and embedding is allowed, however, it adds up to the total
number of slides you have except when you use it for your references, I will not mind
counting them anymore.
