TRANSPORTATION
 The action of transporting someone or
something or the process of being
transported.

 A system or means of transporting people or

goods.
TRANSPORT ENGINEERING
“The application of technology and scientific
principles to the planning, functional design,
operation and management of facilities for any
mode of transportation in order to provide for the
safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable, convenient,
economical, and environmentally compatible
movement of people and goods.”
4
TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
“Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses
engineering techniques to achieve the safe and efficient
movement of people and goods on roadways.”

“It focuses mainly on research for safe and efficient traffic

flow, such as road geometry, sidewalks and crosswalks,
segregated cycle facilities, shared lane marking, traffic signs,
road surface markings and traffic lights.”

5
HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
“Highway engineering is an engineering discipline
branching from civil engineering that involves the
planning, design, construction, operation, and
maintenance of roads, bridges, and tunnels to
ensure safe and effective transportation of people
and goods.”

6
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
TRANSPORT, HUMANS AND GOODS.

TRANSPORT

HUMAN GOODS

 TRANSPORT ; society lifestyle changes and more modern

 HUMAN; create new transportation system and introduce

efficient and affordable transportation system

 GOODS; advancement of transportation system increase the

demands of goods.
7
THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION.

1. Shaping the cities

2. Enable economic activity
3. Promote community interaction
4. Enhance quality of life
5. Communication / movement

8
THE FUNCTIONS OF
TRANSPORTATION.
1. May affect the growth of population in an area, the
growth of a city and also the availability as well as the
type of land use.

2. Crucial for the movement of goods, such that

without it, a community will not develop
progressively in the social and economical aspect.

9
THE FUNCTIONS OF
TRANSPORTATION.
3. Influence the development of public amenities in an
area such as water pipelines, electrical system and
other public utilities.

4. An economic function; it serves along with productive

functions where it will increase productivity of goods
and services..

10
THE FUNCTIONS OF
TRANSPORTATION.
5. Enables society to enjoy the advantages of travelling
for optional trip (shopping, recreation or sight seeing)
or compulsory trip (work).

11
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM.

1. Road networking
2. Private transport
3. Public transport
4. Commercial and trade transport.

12
TYPES OF
TRANSPORTATION

LAND WATER AIR PIPE

13
TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

Definition :
“Application of planning techniques to predict
future travel demand and ensuring adequate
facilities and services to accomplish this demand”

14
TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

Definition :
“Transport planning is about preparing, assessing
and implementing policies, plans and projects to
improve and manage our transport systems.”

15
TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

Purpose :
“To provide information on making decision
about when and where improvements needed to
be made in the transport system which aims to
promote travel and land use development”

16
THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION
PLANNING
1. Efficiency
2. Resource conservation
3. Environmental care
4. Safety enhancement
5. Land use planning

17
TYPES OF PLANNING

Medium
term
Long
Short
term
term
(strategic)
Based on
planning
duration

18
SHORT TERM PLANNING

1. Local council / State level

2. Less than 5 year plan
3. Less complex and require min budget.
4. No great demand on construction activities.
(more on improvement to existing facilities)

19
MEDIUM TERM PLANNING

1. Local council / State level

2. Between 5 - 10 year plan
3. Less complex and require min budget.
4. More on improvement to existing facilities
or minor change to the traffic system.

20
LONG TERM (STRATEGIC) PLANNING

1. Federal level
2. Between 10 - 25 year plan
3. Very complex and require huge financial
expenditure.
4. Involve large and extensive construction
program.
5. Will effect economic, social and environments
