Leadership style is a leader's style of providing direction, implementing plans, and
motivating people. There are many different leadership styles proposed by various authors
that can be exhibited by leaders in the political, business or other fields.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni ; commonly known as M. S. Dhoni; born 7 July 1981 is an

Indian cricketer and the current captain of the Indian national cricket team in limited-over
formats. An attacking right-handed middle-order batsman and wicket-keeper, he is widely
regarded as one of the greatest finishers in limited-over cricket. He made his One Day
International (ODI) debut in December 2004 against Bangladesh, and played his first Test a
year later against Sri Lanka.

Dhoni holds numerous captaincy records such as most wins by an Indian captain in
Tests and ODIs, and most back-to-back wins by an Indian captain in ODIs. He is the most
successful captain India ever had.

when comes to stumping. He is the main wicket-keeper in the team but he occasionally bowls.

1.4 Related leadership theories:

1. The personality focus: “Great Man” thesis

As this theory explains, a great man could change the course of history, similarly
Dhoni changed the history by replacing 3 senior players with 3 young players as he
can see more potential in young players.

2. Leader’s traits

4
As theory explains about the leader’s bringing personal skill, Dhoni’s personal skills
are ;managing egos, success, pressure , failure ; Along with the personal skill, he also
possesses some traits such as focus ,instint ,involve respects the rival.

3. Theory X & Theory Y: Assumptions about human nature

Theory X says about controlling behavior of the people by the manager likewise Dhoni
motivates them to do the right thing during unavoidable circumstances on field when
Dhoni said to Sree Santh “oye sree udhar girlfriend nahi hai idhar aa ja thoda”, when
he was constantly moving from his original position.

Theory Y says essential task of manager is to arrange the organization in such a way
that the average person seeks responsibility in the same manner Dhoni backs and
motivates his team mates; during the ODI series against New Zealand Kadar Jadhav
was constantly being motivated by Dhoni and he took 3 wickets.

4. Contingencies & situation focus

a. HERSEY & BLANCHARD’S SITUATIONAL MODEL explains that

leader should adopt leadership style depending upon subordinate maturity
similarly Dhoni changes his batting order according to situation.

b. BLAKE &MOUTON’S MANAGRIAL GRID STYLE this theory

coordinates between task &people Dhoni gives opportunity to the young
players &also focusing on task as he can select best among them or the coming
matches.

c. PATH-GOAL THEORY leader should create condition enabling subordinate

success likewise Dhoni once said to Jadeja “pehli ball thoda tez daalna ,yeh
pehli ball hi aage badhega”.

As the theory explains transactional leader might get the subordinates to achieve their
existing goal, while at the same time, contributing to the organizational goal .In order
to complete Virat Kohli’s century,Dhoni deliberately didn’t score any run and also
that Virat hit the winning shot.

1.5 Transformational leadership

5
Transformational leader raises the organization in such a way that the leader
&subordinates perform beyond expectation similarly, In the ODI match against New Zealand
