SITE ANALYSIS

SITE SELECTION

Kurukshetra is a developing city in the Indian state of Haryana. Kurukshetra is a land of


historical and religious Importance. The importance of the place is attributed to the fact that
the Kurukshetra War of the Mahabharata was fought on this land and Bhagwat Geeta was
preached.

• It will be built on 20acres of land.

• Its main purpose is to provide high


quality physical infrastructure.

• The existing three campuses at


Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar,
Bangalore were aloof from the
northern zone completely.

• Kurukshetra is located 3 hours away


from New Delhi.

• The site is allocated within


agricultural land along side National

• The site has 6 acres of its land in the green belt area of national highway. However
only 10% construction has been allowed over this area.

• Total site area available for construction is 14 acres with Ground coverage of 25%.

Kurukshetra is situated on 290 58’ 15” North latitudes and 760 15’ 00” East longitude. The town is
expending towards east due to good access to National Highway number – I (Grand Trunk
road).Most of Haryana Urban Development Authority sectors have come up towards east of the
town. The district covers 3.46% area of the State.

Rainfall
The normal annual rainfall of the district is 582 mm which is unevenly distributed over the
area. The south west monsoon, sets in from last week of June and withdraws in end of
September, contributed about 81% of annual rainfall. July and August are the wettest
months. Rest 19% rainfall is received during non-monsoon period.

Wind direction
The wind direction would be westerly with average speed ranging from 9-13kmph. The
maximum temperature may vary between 19-20 ºC and minimum temperature may be
6-8ºC. The relative humidity during morning will be 82-90 % and during evening may range
between 49-59 %.

Soil
The entire district of Kurukshetra is covered by tropical arid brown soils. These soils are
very pale brown in colour. They do not have well defined horizons. In general these soils are
deep and imperfectly drained. The permeability of these soils is low to moderate. These
soils are mildly alkaline to strongly alkaline in reaction. The available moisture holding
capacity of these soils is medium to high. These soils are medium to high in organic matter.
Three soil types sandy loam, loam and clay loam.

Access in the site


The site can be access from east and south direction. National Highway1 is on its east
direction, and a 7.5m wide road on its south direction. National Highway - Existing width
within Municipal Limits, 60 meters width with 30meters wide green belt on both sides.

Power
Kurukshetra town has two 33 Kilovolt power houses over 6 acres area, one 66 Kilovolt (Pipli)
over 4.5 acres area and one 220 Kilovolt (Bhakra Beas Management Board, Sunderpur).
These are sufficient to serve existing population. There is also a proposal of additional 33 KV
power station in the town.

Water supply
There are 5 tubewells of Public Health Department, 22 tubewell of Haryana Urban
Development Authority along with tubewell of University/Regional Engineering College and
HIRMI. The per capita daily supply is 130 liters.

Drainage
There is one nala (open drain) from new grain market to Saraswati nadi. No regular drainage
for rain waters exits.
Sewerage System
60% area of the town is covered by underground sewerage system. There is a proposal to
cover remaining town by underground sewerage system. There are two sewerage disposals
one each of Public Health, and Haryana Urban Development Authority.

DESIGN APPROACH
Various factors that may determine approach and form, other than the philosophy and
experience of the designer are the institutions education policy, the nature of the site,
climatic conditions, available and local technology.

The functional requirements determining form must be satisfied for the institute to be all
successful. The nature of the site itself and the surroundings can greatly contribute to or
severally detract from the eventful form that is evolves.
