Design of vent Liners :


It is proposed to design bottom liners for max. head and adopt the same section for others

Head of water acting = 27.600 M

The liners are designed with 25 mm thick and stiffened by 200 x 12 mm stiffeners at
500 mm C/C suitably. The liner is checked for stresses developed due to water pressure.
The liner is considered as a continuous plate over the stiffeners.

p = 2.76 Kg/cm
S = 50 cm
t = 2.5 cm

Bending Moment = ( p X S ) / 10 = 690 Kg-cm

Zxx liner plate = ( b X t ) / 6 = 1.042 cm (Assumed for 1 cm plate width)

Bending Stress = BM / Zxx = 662.4 kg/cm2 < 979 kg/cm2


Shear Stress in plate = 2.76 x 50 / ( 1 x 2.5 ) = 55.2 kg/cm2 < 734 kg/cm2
Bearing Stress in concrete = 2.76 x 50 / ( 2 x 2.5 ) = 27.6 kg/cm2 < 52 kg/cm2

Hardox – 400 for Zone II & IV :

Proposed thickness of Hardox Plate = 16 mm = 1.6 cm

Bending moment = ( p X S ) / 10 = 690 Kg-cm
Zxx Hardox plate = ( b X t 2 ) / 6 = 0.427 cm3 (Assumed for 1 cm plate width)

Bending Stress = BM / Zxx = 1617 kg/cm2 < 4080 kg/cm2


Shear Stress in plate = 2.76 x 50 / ( 1 x 1.6 ) = 86.3 kg/cm2 < 3060 kg/cm2
Bearing Stress in concrete = 2.76 x 50 / ( 2 x 1.6 ) = 43.1 kg/cm2 < 52 kg/cm2
Checking the Bonnet liners :

Considering 25 mm plate thick.

Checking the bonnet for adequacy of bond stress :

Panel width considered = 310 + 1530 + 310 = 2150 mm


Max. Head = 25.2 M
Height of each panel = 5447 mm, stiffener c/c = 500 mm
Size of Stiffener = 150 x 12 mm

Load acting on the panel = 50 x 215 x 2.52 = 27090 Kg

Bond area available = ( 50 x 215 ) + 2 x 15 x 215 = 17200 cm

\ Bond stress = 27090 / 17200 = 1.58 kg/cm < 8 kg/cm

Note: Since the stresses are low the stiffeners are proposed at 500 mm C/C.

5.0 Design of Track Base :

The width of bearing track on the end girders provided is 100 mm. The half of the total thrust is
transmitted to the track through the bearing.
Track C/C = 1930 mm
Sill to C/L of top sliding pad = 2200 mm

Total thrust on the gate = 1.93 x 2.2 ( 27.60 - 2.2 / 2 ) = 112.52 t


\ Load on each track = 56.26 t

Considering the track base plate as a beam as shown in the sketch. The load 56.26 t is
considered as UDL acting on the area of track.

Proposed bearing pad Aluminum bronze IS 305 grade AB1 having UTS = 500 MPa

Permissible stress = 0.04 x 500 x 10.2 = 204 kg/cm

Bearing pressure on track = Load / Track effective area


= 56260 / ( 10 x 220 )
= 25.57 kg/cm2 < 204 kg/cm2

Since the bearing stress is 25.57 kg/cm no check is required to check on concrete and
hence the arrangement of track girder provided is more than adequate.
6.0 Design of Sliding Gate :

The gate is proposed to have upstream skin plate and downstream sealing. A knife edge
is proposed at the bottom of gate by adopting the suitable slope to skin plate at the bottom. The
emergency & service gates are designed for a head of 27.600 M. The gates are sliding type
operated by double acting hydraulic hoist. The gate is fitted with Aluminum bronze pads which move
on SS flats fixed to the liners. The skin plate is taken as a continuous beam resting on horizontal
girder which act as a support.

\ Water thrust on the gate = 1 x 1.93 x 2.2 x ( 27.600 - 2.2 / 2 ) = 112.52 t
