BRIEF
IDEA OUTLINE
I am producing a music video to the song ‘The Pursuit Of Happiness’ By Kid
Kudi, the Steve Aoki Remix.

The following is my theme and meaning of the video and my narrative:

THEME:

Firstly, my theme and message I am trying to get across is breaking the stereotypes
shown within a diverse friendship group. I am playing on the ‘work hard play hard’
message. I illustrate the struggles and stress caused by education and the want to
succeed and be happy. And the working hard in school but then having an
amazing time making amazing memories when the school day is over. I want the
video to give people a feel-good feeling, allow them to relate if it’s their current
situation or relate and reminisce about the times they were in school and growing
up, and for both audiences, for them to be feeling good about their experience,
and to see that although it is a difficult and stressful time, you aren’t/wasn’t the only
one and that regardless the memories and experiences you have far outweigh the
struggles.

INTRO:

You see a class of students, but the focus is on 6 students in particular who are a
group of friends, this is not made clear when you see them in class, and in regard to
stereotypes, you wouldn’t assume they were friends, you only see that they are a
group of friends when the school day is over and they come together to go on an
adventure.

INTRO – MIDDLE:

You see the students hard at work, smartly dressed and working hard, the school day
is then up, and the 6 flee the room full of excitement. They then go on an adventure
up to a location either London or Brighton. You see their strong friendship, having an
amazing time together laughing and enjoying themselves. You see them take part in
classic activities, such as the car journey together, sneaking someone in the back
because there’s not enough room, going to the fairground (Brighton) and exploring
(London/Brighton), having some drinks and relaxing ones the sun sets and the days
up.

THROUGHOUT:

Throughout this at the appropriate lyric times, flashbacks occur to the stresses and
struggles of each of the 6 students and then cuts back to them happy in the
moment and enjoying themselves. This will include arguments with parents about
grades, working late, nightmares, waking up with cold sweats, the stress of exams
etc.

ENDING:
BRIEF
I then plan on there being a situation that occurs that means they don’t think they
are going to be able to make it back to school on time. You see them getting closer
and closer to the time they need to be at school and trying to get back. The just
manage to make it to school that day in the morning. You see them rush in and sit at
their seats, quickly correcting their uniforms and parts that are out of place so they
look like nothing happened and are presentable. Everyone out of the 6 manages to
do this. Except for Zak, who is sat there smiling thinking he’s all good, the camera
then pans down below the desk and you see that he still has his heels on from the
night before. The song and story ends on this note.

TARGET AUDIENCE

14 – 40
I have decided that based on my narrative and song choice my target
audience will be ages 14 – 40.

I have narrowed this down to who will be able to relate, and the appeal of
the song. The song was released in 2009, meaning 40 year olds would have
been 31 on release. Although this song was released when I was 9, (I am 18
now) it was still an extremely popular song when I was growing up through
secondary school and especially when I was in year 10 and 11 when we
started to have parties and venture into adulthood. This song appeals to
many ages as it is and was such a popular song, one of the classics from its
era. As it is a popular song of its era, many different age groups would have
been listening to this song in their educational years, be that secondary,
college and university. So, the song relates and fits perfectly with my
narrative’s setting. From looking at the ages of people now, when the song
was released and the era of the song, my target audience will be ranging
from 14 year olds, who are currently in education going through year 10 and
11, will like the song and can relate to the narrative as it is about their current
situation. I think this will appeal to all ages then going up to 40, because of
the teenagers and people in their 20’s being in college and university, and
then the ages above that up to 40, will have listened to the song when it was
released and they can reminisce and relate to the narrative as well as the
song. I think above 40’s will still like the music video regarding narrative, but
the song I feel will not appeal to them as much as 40 and below. I’ve chosen
the starting age as 14 because people below this age, although they will
most likely like the song, the narrative is one they can’t quite relate to yet.
Year 10 and 11 is when you start to experience maturing into an adult, serious
exams and the exciting adult activities that begin to get experienced
although not of age. They will not find the content of my video relatable,
although they may find it exciting because they are coming up this age, the
video will not be specifically appealing to them.
