Hub Day Term 3 2016 Friday 9th September

Hautapu visit meet at school at 8am

Positives

Reinforcing habits of mind- positive

Hand signals reinforce the learning - eg being persistent, being empathetic
These values are explicitly taught every Friday and emphasised during the week
Key competencies are broken down - very specific
Teacher’s passionate
Opened up a new perspective in terms of empowering students
Spaces - environments set up to meet the curriculum needs eg writing centre. Separate rooms for each
area - Maths, reading and writing were all separate and resourced for those needs.
Cups - children had all the resources they needed in their cup for maths
Individual students had individual colours to write with in modelling books
Student agency - pictures with names that they could decide where the fitted -
I need complete teacher support, I can do a little on my own, I can do it independently.
There seems to be more time and teachers not as pressured to get through the curriculum - numbers?
Just have to plan one major area - more in depth??
Phonics program at the start of the day
People in the team interview new team members on whether they will join the team.
Resourcing - the phonics program they had going. http://www.yolandasoryl.com/
Like the Prime Book - for maths.

Negatives
Change of personnel that you have no control over.
Resentment of other staff in the school - that the team had more time.
Do they learn about the child as a whole? Are they communicating that across the team.
Teachable moment go out the window as you are segregated and focused on the curriculum subject.
Standard of writing appeared to not be as good for their age- the level of achievement as HNS
Could have been more of a focus on handwriting to help with fluency and formation in writing home.
Ownership of space
Curriculum integration - enriched learning???
The love of learning may be lost by being locked into a structure
Development of the whole teacher
Boredom - because teachers have to take the same curriculum area all day
Loss of the teachable moment
Personality differences
Time requirement of having to meet with parents 4x a year as a team
Responsibility of reporting to parents
Knowledge of the whole child - personal comments - who does this??
Differing standards - how do you reconcile differences
Was it really collaborating when each teacher working in an individual space on their own?
How do relievers cope coming into this space? What impact does this have on the team
Equality of teachers
There is no “Whole child “ child centred learning
Differing learning styles not catered for
Displays ok but not spectacular

Challenging

Habits of mind- not child speak or “real.”

Is this responsive pedagogy?
Packages of things are not things HNS has done - we take the best of resources and make them work
for us
Ownership of space?? Organisation of resources and standards
Displays
Intense focus on children saying where they are at

● Reading Rockets
● SmartPhonics books
● Prime Maths

Mandarin - planning for term 4 - how will we make this work?

Finishes at the end of November.

Use this as a basis for planning - suggestion include basing it around a shared book, science theme,
language experience theme eg pirates, cats etc…
