READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal(s)—Students will make predictions and understand the characteristics and differences of solids,
liquids, and gases.
B. Objective(s)—Students will demonstrate their ability to make predictions by writing down what they think
will happen in the experiment they will observe.
C. Standard(s): 3.PS.3 Generate sound energy using a variety of materials and techniques, and recognize that it
passes through solids, liquids, and gases (i.e. air).

II. Materials
• Empty water bottle
• Balloon
• Vinegar
• Baking soda
• Projector
• Computer
• Paper

III. Anticipatory Set

Okay class, I am going to pass around three balloons. I want you to predict what is in each balloon. I put
something in each of them so I want you to keep your predictions in your head and I will write all your guesses on
the board. I will pass out three balloons for students to feel and shake and make predictions about what is in
them. I will fill one balloon with water, one balloon with rocks/pebbles, and one balloon with air. I will let
students tell me their predictions and I will make a list on the board for each balloon. I am assuming many
students will guess that there is nothing in the balloon with air, which will launch me into my lesson about solids,
liquids, and gasses.

IV. Purpose: When you learn the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases, you will be able to always know the
what any time matter is. Once you all know this, you will be able to do many more experiments knowing this
concept.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION

(ACEI 1.0)
V. Adaptation to Diverse Students—For students who have trouble focusing, I have an engaging activity that will
help them stay focused and on track. For students who struggle with writing, I will give students the option of
writing or drawing their prediction with labels. For gifted students, I will have them think about what other
experiments they could do using the knowledge that they have about liquids, solids, and gasses.
(ACEI 3.2)

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)

• I will have students watch an engaging video that describes the characteristics of the types of matter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuE1LePDZ4Y When you watch this video, I want you to pay close attention to
the different characteristics stated. What did you all think of that video? Can you tell me some characteristics of a
liquid? We’re going to do a little experiment to test your knowledge I have a water bottle here. I am going to put in a
little bit of vinegar. Is vinegar a sold liquid or gas? Now I am going to add a tablespoon of baking powder. After that I
am going to place a balloon on the top of the bottle. What do you think is going to happen to the balloon? (Driving
question) I want you all to write down your prediction for what is going to happen. Give students time to write.
Perform experiment for students. What do you think went into the balloon? Let students observe the experiment.
Ask students what they think happened and why. Explain how the fizz bubbles turned into gas and rose into the
balloon to inflate it.

(ACEI 3.3)
VII. Check for understanding
I will be listening to students name characteristics of each type of matter. I will also be asking questions to see
how well they are understanding the different types of matter?
• What would be an example of a gas other than air?
• What category do you think (any example) would be in?
• Are there any types of matter than can change from one type to another?

VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure

Okay everyone, I want three different people from this group to each give me an example of a liquid. Great job!
Next group, I want three different people to give me examples of a solid. Good! Last group, can you give me 3
examples of a solid? Great job guys. I am impressed with everything you learned! I think you are all getting the
hang of it.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Formative- Asking students questions, listening to students discussions and questions
Summative- student’s written predictions

(ACEI 4.0)
REFLECTION AND POST-LESSON ANALYSIS
1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why not?
2. What were my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How should I alter this lesson?
4. How would I pace it differently?
5. Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
a. Bloom’s Taxonomy
b. Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
7. Was the video effective in teaching the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases?
8. Were the adaptations appropriate and effective?
9. How could I have done this experiment differently?
10. What this a time appropriate activity?
