PRACTICAL

PAPER I

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
This paper has four sections-VISUAL ARTS, MUSIC, DRAMA and DANCE
Answer ONE (1) QUESTION ONLY. This question can come from any section.
Each section contains several options.
Practical assessment will be conducted over a two week period, prior to the start of the
formal NCSE Examination.
School Administrators will make arrangements for the administration and scoring of
the assessment.

SECTION I – VISUAL ARTS


Instructions:

1. Candidates may select ONE (1) piece of work from any of the following three (3)
options: Drawing, Colour and Design and Three-Dimensional Studies (fibre
arts/basketry and decorative craft).

2. Any suitable colour medium can be used. Coloured paints used should be water-based
or fast drying.

4. Charcoal, poster and pencil work must be “fixed.”

5. Unless specifically stated, the dimension of the paper should NOT BE LESS THAN
40 cm x 30 cm or MORE THAN 60 cm x 50 cm.

6. Fabric pieces should NOT BE LESS THAN 45 cm square or MORE THAN


60 cm square.

7. All three-dimensional study pieces should be AT LEAST 15 cm in any direction


with the exception of jewellery or unless otherwise stated.

OPTION 1 – DRAWING

Using any drawing medium such as pen and ink, pastel, crayon, pencil and charcoal or
any combination of drawing media, create a composition from Observations, based on
one of the following:

1 A group of four objects found on the beach, e.g. shells, driftwood, weeds, bucket, spade,
towels, sunglasses etc.

2. A large fruit hanging from a stem on a branch with leaves e.g. breadfruit, chataigne.

3. A facial portrait of an individual wearing one of the following:

• A turban
• A fancy hat
• A small Carnival headpiece
• A bandanna.

OPTION 2 – COLOUR AND DESIGN

(i) Create ONE of the following:

1. An imaginative composition

2. An edition of three prints

3. A design on a piece of fabric

Your work should be based on one of the following themes:

• Tropical fish
• The Soca Warriors
• Butterflies
• A house in the hills

(ii) Graphic Design candidates may produce a design for any ONE of the following:

1. A logo

2. A postage stamp

3. A book cover

4. A label

Your work should be based on one of the following themes:

• Horoscopes
• Fun times

OPTION 3 – THREE DIMENSIONAL STUDIES

Questions in this section are based on the following areas: Fibre Arts/Basketry and
Decorative Craft.
Use any of materials and techniques listed below to produce your work.

Materials
Paper, Straw, Leather, Clay, Wire

Techniques
Modeling, Carving, Assemblage, Stamping, Papier-mache, Cutting, Pasting,
Weaving.

Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Using found objects, create a variety of local pendants. Use these to make a charm
bracelet and matching earrings.

2. Create a mat for resting a hot dish on the table. Use any weaving technique to do this.

3. Design and make a wall plaque based on the theme ‘A Caribbean Beach’. The plaque
should not exceed 20cm in any dimension.

Your work in this section will be scored as follows:

Craftsmanship: 10 marks

Use of material relevant to theme or task 3 marks


Level of skill demonstrated 5 marks
Experimentation 2 marks

Design and Composition: (DRAWING) 10 marks

Use of design elements (line, texture, 5 marks


shape, space)
Unity of functionality 5 marks

Design and Composition (3D) 10 marks

Use of design principles 5 marks


Functionality 5 marks

Originality: 5 marks 5 marks

SECTION II – MUSIC
Instructions:

1. Candidates may sing or play the recorder, pan or another available instrument.

2. The approximate time for each student is 10 – 15 minutes.

A number of pieces of music is provided. You may select and perform one from these,
or with the approval of your teacher you may select a comparable piece. Remember,
you may sing or play an instrument.

Your performance will be scored as follows:

Solo Piece (rhythm, pitch, timbre, dynamics,


phrasing, technique, style/interpretation) 13 marks

Scales and Arpeggios 8 marks

Viva Voce 4 marks

SECTION III – DANCE
Instructions

1. Candidates will have approximately 5 – 10 minutes for their performance.

Candidates must select and perform ONE of the following dances:

o Caribbean Folk

o Carnival Character Dances

o Modern/Contemporary, Western or Indian Classical.

Your performance will be scored as follows:

Technique 8 marks
(Use of dance elements/principles
of alignment of body/orientation of body etc.)

Rhythm 8 marks
(Movement in keeping with the rate of pulse
or beats in the music).

Choreography
(The dance demonstrates an understanding of
the principles, processes and structures of the specific dance). 7 marks

Costume/Dress
(Appropriateness of the costume to the style and theme of
the dance). 2 mark

SECTION 1V – DRAMA
Instructions

1. Candidates selecting this section will be assessed in one (1) of three options: Stage
Craft, Play Making and Drama Improvisation.

2. For Drama improvisation, candidates will be provided with two themes or topics,
10-15 minutes before a performance. The other two options will be assessed prior to
the formal examination.

3. Candidates work in groups of 4 to 5.

4. Candidates responding to Stagecraft will select one Caribbean play of their choice
and one (1) scene design and create either costumes or props. Candidates will be
scored on design, originality, craftsmanship and visual impact.

OPTION 1: STAGECRAFT

In groups of 4 -5, Design and Create a model of a set for a scene from a local play.
Illustrate the costumes for at least three characters in the play.

Stagecraft will be scored as follows:

Design (Includes sketches, functionality of - 5 marks


costumes/props for the scene)

Costumes - 5 marks

Originality - 5 marks

Craftsmanship (skilful use of materials) - 5 marks

Visual impact - 5 marks

OPTION 2: PLAYMAKING

Write and perform a short skit which includes basic costumes, props and set.

Your performance will be scored as follows:

Characterization (use of body language) - 5 marks

Characterization (use of voice) - 5 marks

Actors’ use of space - 5 marks

Understanding of text and subtext - 5 marks

Effective use of props and set - 5 marks

OPTION 3: DRAMA IMPROVISATION

To be handed out to students 10-15 minutes before performance.


Choose a topic below and create a short scene based on it.
The teacher will assign students to groups.

Your performance will be scored as follows:

 Communicating with body 5 marks

 Communicating with voice 5 marks

 Communicating with mind 5 marks


(Awareness of the human environment and relationships)

 Awareness / use of space 5 marks

 The ability to work in groups 5 marks

TOTAL 25 marks
